Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How is overtime pay calculated?

Overtime pay = Overtime hours × (Hourly rate × Overtime multiplier). For time-and-a-half: 10 overtime hours at $20/hr = 10 × ($20 × 1.5) = $300 overtime pay.

Q

What is time and a half?

Time and a half means 1.5× your regular hourly rate for overtime hours. If you earn $20/hour, overtime is $30/hour. This is the federal minimum overtime rate for hours over 40/week.

Q

When does overtime start?

Federal law requires overtime after 40 hours/week. Some states require daily overtime after 8 hours. California requires 1.5× after 8 hours/day and 2× after 12 hours/day.

Q

Is overtime taxed differently?

Overtime is not taxed at a higher rate, but it may push you into a higher tax bracket. Withholding may be higher because the payroll system projects higher annual income.

Example Calculations

150-Hour Week at $25/hr (Time and a Half)

Inputs

Hourly Rate$25.00
Total Hours Worked50
Regular Hours Limit40
OT Multiplier1.5

Result

Total Weekly Pay$1,375.00
Regular Pay (40 hrs)$1,000.00
Overtime Pay (10 hrs)$375.00
Overtime Rate$37.50/hr

Regular Pay = 40 x $25 = $1,000. Overtime Rate = $25 x 1.5 = $37.50/hr. Overtime Pay = 10 x $37.50 = $375. Total = $1,000 + $375 = $1,375.

255-Hour Week at $20/hr (Time and a Half)

Inputs

Hourly Rate$20.00
Total Hours Worked55
Regular Hours Limit40
OT Multiplier1.5

Result

Total Weekly Pay$1,250.00
Regular Pay (40 hrs)$800.00
Overtime Pay (15 hrs)$450.00
Overtime Rate$30.00/hr

Regular Pay = 40 x $20 = $800. Overtime Rate = $20 x 1.5 = $30/hr. Overtime Pay = 15 x $30 = $450. Total = $800 + $450 = $1,250.

Formulas Used

Total Weekly Pay

Total Pay = Regular Pay + Overtime Pay

Sum of regular and overtime earnings for the week.

Where:

Regular Pay= Regular Hours x Hourly Rate
Overtime Pay= Overtime Hours x Overtime Rate

Overtime Rate

Overtime Rate = Hourly Rate x Overtime Multiplier

The pay rate for each overtime hour worked.

Where:

Hourly Rate= Your standard pay rate per hour
Overtime Multiplier= The OT multiplier (typically 1.5 for time-and-a-half)

Overtime Hours

Overtime Hours = Total Hours Worked - Regular Hours Limit

Hours worked beyond the regular hours threshold.

Where:

Total Hours Worked= All hours worked in the week
Regular Hours Limit= Maximum regular hours before OT kicks in (typically 40)

Understanding Overtime Pay

Overtime pay is extra compensation for hours worked beyond the standard workweek. The federal standard is time-and-a-half (1.5×) for hours over 40.

Some states have additional overtime rules, including daily overtime and double-time rates for extended shifts.

Not all employees are eligible for overtime. Salaried employees in certain roles may be "exempt" from overtime requirements.
