Wrap a flexible tape measure around the animal just behind the front legs, over the withers. The tape should be snug but not tight. Measure in inches for the weight formula. Take 2–3 measurements and average.
The heart girth formula is typically accurate within 3–5% for cattle and horses. For pigs and goats, accuracy is within 5–10%. It works best on average-condition animals — very thin or very fat animals will be under- or over-estimated.
| Species | Formula Constant | Dressing % | Accuracy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cattle | 300 | 62% | ±4% |
| Pig | 400 | 72% | ±8% |
| Goat | 300 | 50% | ±7% |
| Horse | 330 | 55% | ±4% |
Dressed weight (hanging weight) is what remains after removing hide, head, feet, and organs. Cattle dress at about 62% of live weight. A 1,200 lb steer yields about 744 lbs hanging weight and roughly 500 lbs of packaged meat.
Body length is measured from the point of the shoulder (front) to the pin bone (rear hip). Use a straight stick or rigid measuring tool laid along the side. The animal should stand square.
