Frequently Asked Questions

Q

What is base weight and why does it matter?

Base weight is everything in your pack except consumables (food, water, fuel). It is the constant weight you carry regardless of trip length, making it the best metric for comparing gear setups.

  • Ultralight: under 10 lbs base weight
  • Lightweight: 10–15 lbs base weight
  • Traditional: 20–30 lbs base weight
  • Lower base weight reduces injury risk and increases daily mileage
CategoryBase WeightTypical GearDaily Mileage
Ultralight<10 lbsDCF tent, quilt, frameless pack20–30 mi
Lightweight10–15 lbsUL tent, down bag, UL pack15–25 mi
Traditional20–30 lbsStandard tent, sleeping bag, framed pack10–15 mi
Q

How much food should I carry per day?

Plan 1.5–2 lbs of food per person per day for backpacking. Thru-hikers eating high-calorie dense food average 1.5 lbs/day (3,000–4,500 cal).

  • Weekend trips: 2 lbs/person/day (more variety, heavier meals)
  • Thru-hiking: 1.5 lbs/person/day (calorie-dense foods)
  • Winter: add 0.5 lbs/day for extra calories
  • Target 125–150 calories per ounce of food weight
Q

What are the Big 3 and how do I reduce them?

The Big 3 are shelter, sleep system, and backpack. They typically account for 60–70% of base weight. Upgrading these three items has the biggest impact on total weight.

  • Shelter: switch from 5 lb tent to 2 lb DCF tent saves 3 lbs
  • Sleep: switch from 4 lb bag to 2 lb quilt saves 2 lbs
  • Pack: switch from 5 lb pack to 2 lb frameless saves 3 lbs
  • Total potential savings: 5–8 lbs from Big 3 alone
Q

What counts as worn weight?

Worn weight includes everything on your body while hiking: clothes, shoes, watch, trekking poles in hand. It is not counted in base weight since you are not carrying it in your pack.

  • Hiking shoes or boots: 1.5–3 lbs per pair
  • Clothing layers: 1–2 lbs total
  • Trekking poles: 0.5–1 lb per pair
  • Watch, sunglasses, hat: 0.5 lb total
