Example Calculations

1Course with Homework, Midterm, and Final

Inputs

Homework95% (weight: 20%)
Midterm88% (weight: 30%)
Final Exam92% (weight: 50%)

Result

Weighted Average91.4% (A-)
GPA Equivalent3.70
Total Weight100%

Weighted sum = (95 x 20) + (88 x 30) + (92 x 50) = 1900 + 2640 + 4600 = 9140. Total weight = 20 + 30 + 50 = 100. Weighted average = 9140 / 100 = 91.4%. This falls in the A- range (90-92), which corresponds to a 3.70 GPA.

2Course with Quiz, Project, and Final

Inputs

Quiz78% (weight: 10%)
Project85% (weight: 40%)
Final Exam90% (weight: 50%)

Result

Weighted Average86.8% (B)
GPA Equivalent3.00
Total Weight100%

Weighted sum = (78 x 10) + (85 x 40) + (90 x 50) = 780 + 3400 + 4500 = 8680. Total weight = 10 + 40 + 50 = 100. Weighted average = 8680 / 100 = 86.8%. This falls in the B range (83-86), which corresponds to a 3.00 GPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How do weighted grades work?

Weighted grades multiply each assignment grade by its weight (importance), then divide by total weight. For example, if homework (20%) is 95% and a final (80%) is 85%, the weighted average is (95×20 + 85×80) ÷ 100 = 87%.

Q

What grade do I need on my final?

To find the required final grade: (Desired Grade - Current Grade × Current Weight) ÷ Final Weight. For example, to get 90% with 85% current (worth 70%) and final worth 30%: (90 - 85×0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 101.7%.

Q

How is GPA calculated?

GPA converts letter grades to a 4.0 scale: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0. Weighted GPA multiplies by credit hours. A 3.5 GPA means your average is between A- and B+.

Q

Why do weights need to add up to 100%?

Ideally, weights should total 100% to represent your full grade. If they don't, the calculator still works by finding the weighted average of what you've entered. This is useful when you haven't completed all assignments yet.
