Total cost$436

Gross: 160×9 = 1,440 sq ft. Windows: –150. Doors: −60. Gables: 2×(30×5/2) = +150. Net = 1,380 sq ft. +10% = 1,518 sq ft. Rolls: ceil(1,518/900) = 2. Tape: 1. Cap nails: ceil(1,518/200) = 8 boxes.

2Small ranch: 120 ft perimeter, 8 ft walls, 6 windows, 2 doors, no gables

Inputs

Perimeter120 ft
Wall height8 ft

Result

Wrap Rolls1 roll
Net area830 sq ft
Seam tape1 roll
Cap nails5 boxes
Total cost$242

Gross: 120×8 = 960. Windows: −90. Doors: −40. Net = 830 sq ft. +10% = 913 sq ft. Rolls: ceil(913/900) = 2. Tape: 1. Cap nails: ceil(913/200) = 5 boxes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How many rolls of house wrap do I need?

Calculate your gross wall area (perimeter × wall height), subtract windows (15 sq ft each) and doors (20 sq ft each), add any gable ends, then add 10% for overlap. Divide by 900 sq ft (the coverage of a standard 9×100 ft roll) and round up.

  • A 160 ft perimeter × 9 ft walls = 1,440 sq ft gross area
  • Subtract 10 windows (–150 sq ft) and 3 doors (−60 sq ft) = 1,230 sq ft net
  • Add 10% overlap: 1,353 sq ft needed. Divide by 900 = 2 rolls
  • Gable ends add triangular area above the wall plate on each end

Large (3,000 sq ft)220 ft1,980 sq ft3 rolls
Q

Do you wrap around windows and doors or cut them out?

House wrap covers the entire wall surface, then you cut out window and door openings from the inside. For windows, make an inverted-Y cut from the center of the opening downward, fold the flaps inward, and secure with flashing tape. Doors get a similar treatment with the bottom cut first.

  • Cover all openings initially — do not try to align wrap edges with rough openings
  • Cut an inverted-Y from center to bottom corners of windows for proper drainage
  • Fold wrap flaps into the rough opening and staple to the framing
  • Apply self-adhesive flashing tape at sill, jambs, and head in the correct sequence
Q

How much overlap does house wrap need?

Horizontal seams need a minimum of 6 inches of overlap, with the upper course overlapping the lower course. Vertical seams need 6 to 12 inches of overlap. At corners, wrap should extend at least 12 inches onto the adjacent wall. Our calculator adds 10% to the net area to account for these overlaps.

  • Horizontal overlaps: 6 inches minimum, upper over lower (like roof shingles)
  • Vertical overlaps: 6–12 inches, with the windward side overlapping the leeward side
  • Corner wraps: extend 12 inches past the corner onto the next wall
  • All seams should be sealed with contractor-grade seam tape (not duct tape)
Q

How many cap nails do I need for house wrap?

Use approximately 1 cap nail or cap staple per square foot of house wrap. Space fasteners every 12 to 18 inches along studs and 6 inches at edges and seams. A standard box of 200 cap nails covers about 200 square feet.

  • Field fastening: every 12–18 inches along each stud (16" or 24" OC)
  • Seams and edges: every 6 inches for secure attachment
  • Use 1-inch cap nails or 1-inch cap staples for standard sheathing
  • Roofing cap nails (plastic cap) provide the largest washer and best holding power

Metal cap nail3/4"Repairs, retrofits$15/200

Q

How long can house wrap be exposed before siding?

Most house wrap manufacturers recommend installing siding within 90 to 120 days (3–4 months) of wrapping. Extended UV exposure degrades the wrap's water resistance and tear strength. Tyvek HomeWrap allows up to 120 days; some generic wraps may only allow 60 days.

  • Tyvek HomeWrap: 120 days maximum UV exposure before siding
  • Generic house wraps: 60–90 days depending on manufacturer
  • UV-damaged wrap becomes brittle and loses water resistance
  • If exposure exceeds the limit, inspect and replace any degraded sections before siding
