Area = 40 × 30 × √(1 + 0.25) = 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,341.6 sq ft. Squares = 13.42 × 1.1 waste = 14.76. Bundles = ⌈14.76 × 3⌉ = 45. Cost = 45 × $40 = $1,800.

Area = 24 × 20 × √(1 + 0.111) = 480 × 1.054 = 505.9 sq ft. Squares = 5.06 × 1.1 = 5.57. Bundles = ⌈5.57 × 3⌉ = 17. Cost = 17 × $30 = $510.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How many bundles of shingles do I need?

Divide your roof area by 100 to get squares, then multiply by 3 bundles per square (for standard shingles). A 2,000 sq ft roof needs 20 squares × 3 = 60 bundles. Add 10-15% waste for cuts and starter strips.

  • Formula: Bundles = (Roof Area ÷ 100) × Bundles per Square × (1 + Waste%)
  • Standard 3-tab & architectural: 3 bundles per square (33.3 sq ft each)
  • Premium/designer shingles: 4 bundles per square (25 sq ft each)
  • Add 10% waste for simple gable roofs, 15% for hip roofs with valleys
  • A 1,500 sq ft gable roof: 15 squares × 3 × 1.10 = 50 bundles

Q

How many square feet does a bundle of shingles cover?

One bundle of standard 3-tab or architectural shingles covers about 33.3 sq ft (3 bundles per 100 sq ft square). Premium/designer shingles may require 4 bundles per square, covering only 25 sq ft per bundle.

  • 3-tab shingles: 33.3 sq ft per bundle, ≈26 shingles per bundle
  • Architectural/dimensional: 33.3 sq ft per bundle, ≈21 shingles per bundle
  • Premium/designer: 25 sq ft per bundle (4 bundles per square)
  • Bundle weight: 3-tab ≈60–80 lbs, architectural ≈70–80 lbs per bundle
  • Ridge cap shingles: sold separately, ≈33 linear feet per bundle
Q

How much do shingles cost per square?

Shingle costs per square (100 sq ft): 3-Tab: $90-120, Architectural: $100-150, Premium/Designer: $200-400. Material only — installation adds $150-300 per square for labor.

  • 3-Tab: $90–$120/square materials, 20–25 year warranty
  • Architectural: $100–$150/square materials, 30–50 year warranty
  • Premium (impact-resistant): $200–$400/square, Class 4 hail rating
  • Underlayment: $15–$25 per roll (covers ≈400 sq ft)
  • Total installed cost: $350–$700 per square including labor and materials

Q

What is a roofing square?

A roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof area. It is the standard unit for ordering roofing materials. For example, a 2,000 sq ft roof is 20 squares. Always account for roof pitch — steeper roofs have more actual area.

  • 1 roofing square = 100 sq ft = 10 ft × 10 ft area
  • Average US home roof: 17–20 squares (1,700–2,000 sq ft)
  • Pitch multiplier: 4:12 = 1.054×, 6:12 = 1.118×, 8:12 = 1.202×, 12:12 = 1.414×
  • A 30 ft × 40 ft footprint at 6:12 pitch = 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,342 sq ft = 13.4 squares
  • Steeper pitch (8:12+) increases area by 20%+ over flat measurement
