An 8″×10″ journal cover with 1″ stamps and 1/8″ spacing fits 63 stamps in a 7×9 grid. Plan about 38 minutes of stamping plus 15 minutes prep for a total of ~53 minutes.
Subtract your edge margin from both dimensions to get the usable area. Divide the usable width by the stamp width plus spacing to get stamps per row. Divide the usable height by the stamp height plus spacing to get the number of rows. Multiply stamps per row by rows for total stamp count.
| Piece Size | 0.5″ Stamps | 0.75″ Stamps | 1″ Stamps |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4″×3.5″ Wallet | 42 | 16 | 9 |

Vegetable-tanned leather in the 4–6 oz range is ideal for stamping and tooling. It is thick enough to hold deep impressions but thin enough to cut and fold for wallets and covers. Heavier 6–8 oz leather works for belts and holsters. Always use veg-tan, never chrome-tanned leather.
| Weight | Thickness | Best For | Price/sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2–4 oz | 1/32″–1/16″ | Linings, thin goods | $5–$8 |
| 4–6 oz | 1/16″–3/32″ | Tooling, wallets | $7–$12 |
| 6–8 oz | 3/32″–1/8″ | Belts, holsters | $8–$14 |
| 8–10 oz | 1/8″–5/32″ | Saddles, armor | $10–$18 |
Time depends on stamp size and piece area. Small 0.5″ stamps take about 15 seconds each, medium 0.75″ stamps about 25 seconds, and large 1″ stamps about 35 seconds. A wallet with 42 small stamps takes about 10 minutes of stamping plus 15 minutes of prep and casing.
| Stamp Size | Time/Stamp | Wallet (16) | Journal (63) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5″ Small | ~15 sec | ~4 min | ~16 min |
| 0.75″ Medium | ~25 sec | ~7 min | ~26 min |
| 1″ Large | ~35 sec | ~9 min | ~37 min |
Sponge both sides of the leather with room-temperature water until the color darkens evenly. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes until the color returns to normal but the leather feels cool. The leather should hold a fingernail impression without springing back. If it’s too wet, stamps will slide; too dry, stamps won’t impress.
| Step | Action | Duration | Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Wet | Sponge both sides | 1–2 min | Color darkens evenly |
| 2. Wait | Let moisture absorb | 10–15 min | Color returns to normal |
| 3. Test | Fingernail impression | 5 sec | Mark stays, no spring-back |
| 4. Re-case | Re-wet dry spots | As needed | Even moisture throughout |
Veg-tan leather costs $5–$18 per square foot depending on weight and quality. Standard 4–6 oz tooling leather runs $7–$12/sq ft. A full side (20–24 sq ft) costs $140–$280. Pre-cut panels for wallets and small goods cost $3–$8 per piece from leather suppliers.
| Grade | Price/sq ft | Full Side Cost | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | $5–$8 | $100–$160 | Practice, beginner |
| Standard (W&C) | $10–$14 | $200–$280 | Professional projects |
| Premium (H. Oak) | $12–$18 | $240–$360 | Saddle-grade work |
