Frequently Asked Questions

Q

What size pilot hole do I need?

For hardwood, the pilot hole should equal the screw root diameter. For softwood, use 85% of the root diameter. A #8 screw needs a 7/64" bit in hardwood or a 5/64" bit in softwood.

  • Hardwood: pilot = root diameter (100%)
  • Softwood: pilot = 85% of root diameter
  • #6 screw: 5/64" (hardwood) or 1/16" (softwood)
  • #8 screw: 7/64" (hardwood) or 5/64" (softwood)
  • #10 screw: 7/64" (hardwood) or 3/32" (softwood)

Q

Do I always need a pilot hole?

Always in hardwood to prevent splitting. In softwood, pilot holes are recommended near edges, in thin stock, and with larger screws (#10+). Without a pilot hole, screws can split the wood and fail to seat properly.

  • Always drill in hardwood (oak, maple, walnut)
  • Recommended in softwood near edges or ends
  • Required for screws #10 and larger in any wood
  • Not needed: drywall screws in framing lumber
Q

What is the difference between pilot and clearance holes?

A pilot hole is drilled in the receiving piece and is smaller than the screw to allow threads to grip. A clearance hole is drilled in the top piece and is larger than the screw so it passes through freely, pulling the joint tight.

  • Pilot hole: in receiving piece, smaller than screw
  • Clearance hole: in top piece, larger than screw
  • Both needed for proper two-piece joints
  • Clearance hole = screw major diameter + 0.015"
Q

How deep should a pilot hole be?

Drill the pilot hole at least as deep as the screw will penetrate. For most wood screws, this is the full screw length minus the top board thickness. Use masking tape on the drill bit as a depth stop.

  • Depth = screw length minus top board thickness
  • Use tape flag as depth stop on drill bit
  • Go slightly deeper than needed for chips
  • In hardwood, full screw penetration depth
