The dowel diameter should be no more than half the board thickness. For 3/4" stock, use 3/8" dowels. For 1/2" stock, use 1/4" dowels. This prevents splitting while maximizing joint strength.
Drill each side to 1.5x the dowel diameter depth, with a small gap (1/16") for glue squeeze-out. For 3/8" dowels, drill about 9/16" deep into each board, making the total dowel length about 1-3/16".
Space dowels 2-4 inches apart for edge joints, with 1-2 inches from each end. For most 3/4" stock applications, 3" spacing provides good strength without weakening the wood.
A doweling jig is highly recommended for accurate hole alignment. Even 1/32" misalignment can prevent the joint from closing. Self-centering dowel jigs cost $20-50 and dramatically improve accuracy.
