Hitting percentage is calculated as (Kills - Errors) / Total Attempts. A .300 hitting percentage means the hitter converts 30% of attempts into kills minus errors. This is the most important offensive metric in volleyball, used at all levels from high school to the Olympics.
- Formula: (Kills - Errors) / Total Attempts
- .300+ = elite hitter (All-American level)
- .250-.299 = above average (strong starter)
- .200-.249 = average (solid contributor)
- Below .150 = struggling (consider adjustments)
- Negative hitting % means more errors than kills
| Hitting % | Level | Kills/Set | Typical Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| .400+ | Elite | 5.0+ | Middle blocker |
| .300-.399 | Excellent | 4.0-5.0 | Outside/opposite |
| .250-.299 | Above average | 3.5-4.0 | Any attacker |
| .200-.249 | Average | 2.5-3.5 | Role player |
| Below .200 | Below average | <2.5 | Needs improvement |
