1Standard Window (60" wide, 84" long, 2x fullness)

Inputs

Window Width60"
Curtain Length84"
Fullness2x (Standard)
Hem Allowance12"
Panel Width54"

Result

Total Fabric Needed8 yards (7.32 m)
Panels Needed3
Cut Length per Panel96"
Brackets3

Total fabric width = 60 × 2 = 120". Panels needed = ceil(120 / 54) = 3. Cut length per panel = 84 + 12 = 96". Total fabric = 3 × 96 = 288". Convert to yards: 288 / 36 = 8 yards.

2Floor-Length Sheers (48" wide, 96" long, 2.5x fullness)

Inputs

Window Width48"
Curtain Length96"
Fullness2.5x (Full)
Hem Allowance12"
Panel Width54"

Result

Total Fabric Needed9 yards (8.23 m)
Panels Needed3
Cut Length per Panel108"
Brackets3

Total fabric width = 48 × 2.5 = 120". Panels needed = ceil(120 / 54) = 3. Cut length per panel = 96 + 12 = 108". Total fabric = 3 × 108 = 324". Convert to yards: 324 / 36 = 9 yards.

3Wide Window with Standard Fullness (96" wide, 84" long)

Inputs

Window Width96"
Curtain Length84"
Fullness2x (Standard)
Hem Allowance12"
Panel Width54"

Result

Total Fabric Needed10.67 yards (9.75 m)
Panels Needed4
Cut Length per Panel96"
Brackets4

Total fabric width = 96 × 2 = 192". Panels needed = ceil(192 / 54) = 4. Cut length per panel = 84 + 12 = 96". Total fabric = 4 × 96 = 384". Convert to yards: 384 / 36 = 10.67 yards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How do I calculate fabric for curtains?

Fabric needed = (Window width × Fullness ÷ Fabric width) × (Curtain length + Hem allowance). For a 60" window with 2x fullness using 54" fabric at 84" length: (60×2÷54) × (84+12) = 2.2 panels × 96" = ~5.5 yards per panel.

  • Measure window width and desired curtain length
  • Multiply width by fullness (usually 2-2.5x)
  • Divide by fabric width to get number of panels
  • Add 12-16" for hems and headers
  • Round up to full panels

Q

What is curtain fullness and how much do I need?

Fullness = total fabric width ÷ window width. Standard fullness is 2x (fabric twice as wide as window). Sheers need 2.5-3x for proper draping. Flat panels use 1.5x. More fullness = more elegant look but more fabric cost.

  • 2x fullness: Most common, works for most fabrics
  • Sheers: Use 2.5-3x or they look flat/cheap
  • Heavy fabrics (velvet): Can use 1.5-2x
  • Rod pocket curtains: 2-2.5x fullness
  • Grommet/ring top: 1.5-2x fullness

Q

How long should curtains be?

Standard curtain lengths: Floor length (just touching floor), puddle (1-6" on floor), floating (½" above floor). Measure from rod to desired endpoint. Most common is floor length or ½" float for easy cleaning.

  • Measure from top of rod (not bottom of ring)
  • Measure in 3 places (windows are rarely level)
  • Use shortest measurement for floating curtains
  • Floor-length: Most versatile and popular
  • Puddle: High maintenance, shows dust

Q

How much fabric allowance do I need for hems?

Standard allowances: Top header 4" (rod pocket) or 8" (pinch pleat), bottom hem 8" for double-fold. Side hems 1-2" each. Total add 12-16" to cut length. Pattern matching may require extra fabric.

  • Top (rod pocket): 4" allowance
  • Top (pinch pleat): 8" allowance
  • Bottom hem: 8" (folds to 4" double hem)
  • Side hems: 1-2" each side
  • Total: Add 12-16" to finished length
  • Pattern repeat: Add one full repeat per panel

Pinch pleat8"8"16"

Q

How wide should my curtain rod be?

Extend rod 3-6" beyond window frame on each side (6-12" total). This makes window appear larger and allows curtains to stack off the glass when open, maximizing light. Mount rod 4-6" above frame for height illusion.

  • Rod extends 3-6" past frame on each side
  • Total rod width = window + 6-12"
  • Mount 4-6" above window frame
  • Ceiling mount: Creates dramatic height
  • Wide windows (72"+): May need center support bracket

Q

How do I calculate fabric for patterned curtains?

Add one full pattern repeat per panel for matching. If repeat is 24" and you need 4 panels at 96" each, calculate: 4 × (96 + 24) = 480" = 13.3 yards. Large repeats significantly increase fabric needs.

  • Pattern repeat is listed on fabric bolt
  • Add one repeat per cut panel
  • Small repeat (<12"): Minor extra cost
  • Large repeat (24"+): Can add 25-35% more fabric
  • Horizontal patterns need matching across panels
  • Order all fabric at once (dye lots vary)
