Frequently Asked Questions

Q

What is PPI and why does it matter?

PPI (Pixels Per Inch) measures pixel density — how many pixels fit in one inch of screen. Higher PPI means sharper text and images. Generally, 100+ PPI is acceptable for monitors at desk distance, 200+ PPI is considered 'Retina' quality, and 300+ PPI is standard for smartphones.

  • Formula: PPI = √(width² + height²) ÷ diagonal (inches)
  • 27" 1440p monitor = 108.8 PPI; 27" 4K monitor = 163.2 PPI
  • Apple Retina threshold: ≈220 PPI for laptops, ≈326 PPI for phones
  • Human eye resolves ≈300 PPI at 12 inches — diminishing returns above that
  • Higher PPI enables clearer small text, sharper icons, and smoother curves
Q

What is a good PPI for a monitor?

For a desktop monitor at typical viewing distance (2-3 feet), 90-110 PPI is standard (1080p on 24"), 110-140 PPI is sharp (1440p on 27"), and 160+ PPI is very sharp (4K on 27"). For laptops, 130-230 PPI is common. The ideal PPI depends on how close you sit to the screen.

  • 24" 1080p: 91.8 PPI — acceptable for general use and gaming
  • 27" 1440p: 108.8 PPI — sharp text, popular for coding and productivity
  • 27" 4K: 163.2 PPI — very sharp, may need 150% scaling in Windows
  • 32" 4K: 137.7 PPI — sweet spot for 4K without scaling
  • 14" laptop 1080p: 157.4 PPI — adequate; 14" 2K (2560×1600): 214.3 PPI — excellent

Q

How is aspect ratio calculated?

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between width and height. Divide both the width and height resolution by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For example, 1920×1080 has a GCD of 120, giving 16:9. Common ratios: 16:9 (widescreen), 16:10 (productivity), 21:9 (ultrawide), 32:9 (super ultrawide).

  • 16:9 — standard widescreen (1920×1080, 2560×1440, 3840×2160)
  • 16:10 — taller for documents (1920×1200, 2560×1600)
  • 21:9 — ultrawide cinema (2560×1080, 3440×1440)
  • 32:9 — super ultrawide = two 16:9 monitors side by side
  • 4:3 — legacy standard (1024×768, 1600×1200), still used in some tablets

Q

What is the recommended viewing distance?

A general rule is 1.2× the screen diagonal for desktop monitors. For a 27" monitor, sit about 32" (2.7 feet) away. For TVs, the recommendation is 1.5-2.5× the diagonal. These distances ensure you can see the full screen without excessive eye movement.

  • 24" monitor: ≈29" (2.4 ft) optimal viewing distance
  • 27" monitor: ≈32" (2.7 ft) optimal viewing distance
  • 32" monitor: ≈38" (3.2 ft) optimal viewing distance
  • 55" TV at 4K: 4.5–7 ft recommended (closer than 1080p)
  • Higher resolution allows closer viewing — 4K at 27" is sharp even at 20"
Q

Does higher resolution always mean better?

Not necessarily. A 4K resolution (3840×2160) on a 24" monitor gives extremely high PPI, but text and UI elements may appear very small without scaling. The ideal resolution depends on screen size, viewing distance, GPU power, and personal preference.

  • 4K on 24": 183.6 PPI — requires 200% scaling, effective workspace = 1080p
  • 4K on 32": 137.7 PPI — usable at 100–125% scaling with more workspace
  • Gaming: 4K requires 2–3× the GPU power of 1080p for same frame rate
  • 1440p is the sweet spot for 27" — sharp text without excessive scaling
  • macOS and Windows handle high-DPI differently; macOS scales more aggressively
