Sections = ceil(200/10) = 20. Hangers = ceil(200/2) = 100. Elbows = 6 × 3 = 18. Gutter cost = 200 × $25 = $5,000. Downspout cost = 72 × $15 = $1,080. Accessories = $294. Total = $6,374.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How many gutter hangers do I need?

Gutter hangers should be spaced every 2 feet for proper support. For 120 feet of gutter, you need 60 hangers. In snow-heavy areas, space hangers every 18 inches for extra strength.

  • Standard spacing: Every 24" (2 ft) for most climates
  • Snow/ice areas: Every 18" to handle extra weight
  • Hidden hangers are strongest – screw into rafter tails, not just fascia
  • Use 2.5" or 3" screws for hangers, not the short ones in the box
  • Budget ~$1–$2 per hanger for aluminum hidden hangers
Hanger TypeCost EachStrengthBest For
Hidden hanger$1–$2HighestAll installations (recommended)
Spike & ferrule$0.50–$1ModerateTemporary / budget repairs
Strap hanger$1–$1.50GoodHalf-round gutters
Q

How many downspouts do I need?

Plan for 1 downspout per 20-30 feet of gutter. For a typical home with 120 feet of gutter, 4-6 downspouts provide adequate drainage. Place downspouts at corners and low points.

  • Rule of thumb: 1 downspout per 20–30 ft of gutter run
  • Heavy rain areas: 1 per 20 ft; mild climates: 1 per 30 ft
  • Each 2×3" downspout drains ~600 sq ft of roof area
  • Each 3×4" downspout drains ~1,200 sq ft of roof area
  • Extend downspouts 4–6 ft from foundation to prevent water damage
Q

What size gutters do I need?

5-inch K-style gutters handle most residential roofs. Upgrade to 6-inch gutters for roofs over 2,400 sq ft, steep pitches above 8/12, or heavy rainfall areas. Half-round gutters are decorative but hold less water.

  • 5" K-style handles ~5,520 sq ft of roof per downspout
  • 6" K-style handles ~7,960 sq ft – 40% more capacity than 5"
  • Half-round gutters hold ~40% less water than same-width K-style
  • Steep roofs (8/12+) shed water faster – upsize gutters or add downspouts
  • Check your local rainfall intensity map (NOAA) for proper sizing

6" K-style2.0 gal/min7,960 sq ftLarge roofs, heavy rain
5" half-round0.7 gal/min2,500 sq ftHistoric / decorative
6" half-round1.2 gal/min3,840 sq ftUpscale homes
Q

How many elbows per downspout?

Each downspout typically needs 3 elbows: 2 at the top (to route from gutter to wall) and 1 at the bottom (to direct water away from the foundation). Add more for complex routing.

  • Standard: 2 elbows at top (gutter-to-wall offset) + 1 at bottom
  • Each elbow reduces flow capacity by ~20%, so minimize bends
  • A-style elbows (75°) for top connections; B-style (45°) for bottom kickout
  • Elbow cost: $3–$8 each depending on material (aluminum cheapest)
  • Use pop-up emitter at the bottom instead of an elbow for underground drainage
