Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much does ABS shrink when 3D printed?

ABS typically shrinks 0.5-1.0% (average 0.8%). A 100mm part may come out 99.2mm. Scale up by 100.8% in your slicer to compensate. Enclosed printers reduce shrinkage.

  • ABS: 0.5-1.0% (avg 0.8%)
  • Nylon: 1.0-2.0% (avg 1.5%)
  • PLA: 0.2-0.5% (avg 0.3%)
  • PETG: 0.2-0.6% (avg 0.4%)

Q

How do I compensate for shrinkage in my slicer?

Scale your model by 100/(100-shrinkage%). For 0.8% shrinkage: scale = 100/99.2 = 100.806%. Apply uniform XYZ scaling in your slicer.

  • Scale = 100 / (100 - shrinkage%)
  • 0.8% shrinkage: scale to 100.806%
  • Apply to all axes (X, Y, Z)
  • Some slicers have per-axis scaling
Q

Does shrinkage vary by print settings?

Yes. Higher print temperatures, faster cooling, and thicker layers increase shrinkage. Enclosed printers with heated chambers reduce ABS/nylon shrinkage significantly.

  • Higher temp = more shrinkage
  • Faster cooling = more warping
  • Enclosure reduces ABS shrinkage 30-50%
  • Annealing can cause additional 1-3% shrinkage
Q

Which filament has the least shrinkage?

PLA has the least shrinkage at 0.2-0.5%, making it the most dimensionally accurate FDM material. PETG is also low at 0.2-0.6%. Nylon and PP shrink the most.

  • Lowest: PLA (0.2-0.5%)
  • Low: PETG (0.2-0.6%)
  • Moderate: ABS, ASA (0.5-1.0%)
  • Highest: Nylon, PP (1.0-2.5%)
