Weaving Tips

Soaking: Soak flat reed 10–15 minutes before weaving. Round reed needs 5–10 minutes. Over-soaking makes reed mushy and hard to control.
Packing: Pack each weaver row tightly against the previous one. Use a packing tool or butter knife to push rows down evenly.
Tucking: Tuck spoke ends securely by bending them over the last weaver row and threading down 2–3 rows. Trim excess flush.
Joining: When a weaver runs out, overlap the new piece behind a spoke for 2–3 inches. Stagger joins so they don’t cluster on one side.

A 12-by-8-inch rectangular basket uses 39 spokes and 16 rows of 3/8" flat reed weavers. The wider reed means fewer rows to cover the same height, finishing with about 151 feet of total material.

314" Round Basket — 1/2" Flat Reed, Twill Weave

A large 14-inch twill basket uses an even spoke count of 30, with 16 rows of 1/2" flat reed. The heavier reed covers height quickly and creates a diagonal pattern that looks professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much reed do I need for a basket?

A medium 10-inch round basket with 6-inch sides needs about 150–160 feet of 1/4" flat reed. The total depends on basket shape, height, reed width, and weave pattern. Waling (3-rod weave) uses roughly 3 times more weaver reed than plain over-under weave.

  • Small berry basket (6" round, 4" tall): ~30–40 ft of 1/4" flat reed
  • Medium utility basket (10" round, 6" tall): ~150–160 ft of 1/4" flat reed
  • Large storage basket (14" round, 8" tall): ~150–165 ft of 1/2" flat reed
  • Laundry hamper (18" round, 14" tall): ~200–280 ft depending on reed type
  • Rectangular baskets use roughly the same total as round baskets of similar perimeter

Medium utility10"6"~155 ft
Large storage14"8"~200 ft

Q

How many spokes does a round basket need?

A round basket needs an odd number of spokes for plain (over-under) weave so the pattern alternates correctly each row. A 10-inch basket typically needs 35–40 spokes spaced about 7/8" apart. Twill weave (over 2, under 2) requires an even number of spokes instead.

  • Spoke count formula: π × diameter ÷ spoke spacing, rounded to nearest odd (plain) or even (twill)
  • Spoke spacing for 1/4" flat reed: 3/4" to 1" (typically 7/8")
  • Spoke spacing for 3/8" flat reed: 1" to 1.5" (typically 1.25")
  • Each spoke must extend across the base plus up both sides plus 3" tuck allowance per end
  • Rectangular baskets calculate spokes per side: ceil(side length ÷ spacing) + 1
Q

What size reed should I use for basket weaving?

1/4" flat reed is the most popular for beginners and general-purpose baskets. Use 3/8" or 1/2" flat reed for larger baskets with fewer rows. Round reed (#2 through #7) works well for waling, rims, and decorative elements. Seagrass and rattan add natural texture.

  • 1/4" flat reed: ~450 ft/lb coil, ~$12/lb — best all-around for weavers and spokes
  • 3/8" flat reed: ~250 ft/lb coil, ~$14/lb — faster weaving on medium-large baskets
  • 1/2" flat reed: ~175 ft/lb coil, ~$14/lb — structural spokes and large baskets
  • #3 round reed: ~750 ft/lb coil, ~$10/lb — ideal for waling and accent rows
  • Seagrass: ~300 ft/lb coil, ~$8/lb — affordable, natural look, less flexible

Q

What is the difference between plain weave, twill, and waling?

Plain weave (over 1, under 1) is the simplest pattern and uses the least reed. Twill (over 2, under 2) creates a diagonal pattern and requires even-numbered spokes. Waling uses 3 weavers simultaneously, creating a strong rope-like texture but consuming about 3 times more material.

  • Plain weave: simplest, odd spoke count required, least material, great for beginners
  • Twill weave: diagonal pattern, even spoke count, same material as plain, intermediate skill
  • Waling (3-rod weave): 3 weavers at once, uses 3× weaver reed, strongest and most decorative
  • Most baskets combine patterns: plain sides with a waling row at top and bottom for strength
  • Waling rows at transitions add rigidity where the base meets the sides
Q

How long should basket spokes be?

Spoke length equals the base dimension plus twice the basket height plus 6 inches for tucking (3 inches on each end). A 10-inch round basket with 6-inch sides needs spokes 28 inches long. Always cut spokes a little long — you can trim excess but you cannot add length.

  • Formula: spoke length = base diameter + (2 × height) + 6" tuck allowance
  • Example: 10" base + 12" (2 × 6" height) + 6" = 28" per spoke
  • For rectangular baskets, alternating spokes run lengthwise and widthwise
  • Cut 2–3 extra spokes in case of breakage during bending
  • Soak spokes thoroughly before bending to prevent cracking
Q

How much does it cost to weave a basket at home?

Materials for a medium 10-inch basket cost $5–$12 depending on reed type. A 1-lb coil of 1/4" flat reed ($12) contains about 450 feet, enough for 2–3 medium baskets. Handwoven baskets of similar size retail for $35–$100 at craft fairs, making DIY weaving highly cost-effective.

  • Small berry basket (6"): $3–$5 in materials vs $20–$30 retail
  • Medium utility basket (10"): $5–$12 in materials vs $35–$65 retail
  • Large storage basket (14"): $10–$18 in materials vs $50–$100 retail
  • 1-lb coil of 1/4" flat reed ($12) makes 2–3 medium baskets
  • Basic tool kit (packing tool, awl, cutters): $15–$25 one-time investment
