Spinning Tips

Buy extra: Add 10–15% extra fiber to your estimate for sampling, learning tension, and waste.
Measure WPI: Wrap your spun singles around a ruler without stretching or overlapping. Count wraps in 1 inch to confirm your yarn weight.
Consistent drafting: Inconsistent thickness wastes fiber. Practice on a sample before committing your project fiber.
Festival tip: Braids are typically 4 oz. Two braids (8 oz) of worsted-weight fiber make roughly 340 yards—enough for a hat and a pair of mittens.

Example Calculations

1Worsted 2-Ply Sweater from Merino Roving

Inputs

Target Yarn WeightWorsted (9–11 WPI)
Fiber TypeMerino (prepared roving)
Plying2-ply
ProjectSweater (1,200 yards)

Result

Prepared Fiber Needed24.0 oz (1.50 lb)
Yield (singles)50 yd/oz
Yield (after 2-ply)42.5 yd/oz
Plying Loss15%

Worsted singles yield about 50 yards per ounce. After 2-ply twist loss of 15%, effective yield drops to 42.5 yd/oz. For 1,200 yards: 1,200 ÷ 42.5 = 28.2 oz. Rounded to 28.2 oz or about 1.76 lb of prepared roving.

2Fingering Socks from BFL Top

Inputs

Target Yarn WeightFingering (14–18 WPI)
Fiber TypeBFL (prepared roving)
Plying3-ply
ProjectSocks (pair, 425 yards)

Result

Prepared Fiber Needed4.0 oz
Yield (singles)131 yd/oz
Yield (after 3-ply)105 yd/oz
Plying Loss20%

Fingering singles from BFL yield about 131 yards per ounce. After 3-ply twist loss of 20%, effective yield drops to 105 yd/oz. For 425 yards: 425 ÷ 105 = 4.0 oz of prepared BFL top.

3Festival Mode: What Can 8 oz of Alpaca Make?

Inputs

Fiber Available8 oz alpaca roving
Target Yarn WeightDK (11–12 WPI)
Plying2-ply

Result

Total Yarn Yardage544 yards
Enough ForHat + scarf, or 1 large shawl
Yield (after 2-ply)68 yd/oz

DK singles from alpaca yield about 80 yd/oz. After 2-ply loss of 15%, that is 68 yd/oz. With 8 oz: 8 × 68 = 544 yards, enough for a hat (200 yd) plus a scarf (300 yd), or one generous shawl.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much roving do I need to spin a sweater?

A worsted-weight adult sweater needs roughly 1,000–2,000 yards of yarn. At about 800 yards per pound for worsted singles, you need 1.25–2.5 lb of prepared roving. With 2-ply twist loss of 10–15%, plan on 1.4–2.9 lb of roving total.

  • Worsted-weight sweater (adult M): 1,000–1,500 yards of finished yarn
  • Worsted singles yield: ~800 yards per pound of prepared roving
  • 2-ply twist loss: 10–15% yardage reduction
  • From raw fleece (Merino): multiply by 1.7–2.0 to account for 50–65% scour yield
  • Budget 1.5–3 lb of roving for a full adult sweater depending on yarn weight

Q

What is wraps per inch (WPI) and how do I measure it?

Wraps per inch (WPI) measures yarn thickness by counting how many times a strand wraps around a ruler in one inch without overlapping or gaps. WPI determines yarn weight category and is the standard way handspinners classify their output.

  • Lace: 30+ WPI (2,600+ yards per pound)
  • Fingering: 14–18 WPI (1,600–2,600 yards per pound)
  • Sport: 12–14 WPI (1,200–1,600 yards per pound)
  • DK: 11–12 WPI (1,000–1,200 yards per pound)
  • Worsted: 9–11 WPI (500–1,100 yards per pound)
  • Bulky: 7–9 WPI (300–500 yards per pound)

Q

How much fiber do you lose when scouring raw fleece?

Scour loss depends on the breed. Merino loses 35–50% to lanolin, dirt, and suint. BFL loses 30–40%. Alpaca and silk lose very little, yielding 85–95% clean fiber. Always buy more raw fleece than you think you need.

  • Merino: 50–65% clean yield (35–50% loss from heavy lanolin)
  • Blue Faced Leicester (BFL): 60–70% clean yield
  • Corriedale: 65–75% clean yield (moderate lanolin)
  • Alpaca: 85–95% clean yield (minimal grease)
  • Silk: 95%+ yield (pre-processed, almost no waste)
  • Cotton: 90–95% yield (minimal processing loss)

BFL60–70%30–40%Moderate grease
Alpaca85–95%5–15%Very clean
Silk95%+<5%Pre-processed
Q

How does plying affect my yarn yardage?

Plying reduces total yardage because twist shortens the yarn. Two-ply loses 10–15% of your singles yardage. Three-ply loses 15–20%. The tighter the ply twist, the more yardage you lose. Always account for plying loss when planning fiber quantities.

  • Singles: no plying loss (0%), but yarn is less durable and biases when knit
  • 2-ply: 10–15% yardage loss from twist take-up
  • 3-ply: 15–20% yardage loss, rounder yarn with better stitch definition
  • Cable ply (plied plies): up to 25% total loss
  • Higher ply twist = more loss but stronger, rounder yarn
Q

What is "festival shopping mode" for spinning fiber?

Festival shopping mode is a reverse calculation: you enter how many ounces of fiber you have (or plan to buy at a fiber festival) and the calculator tells you what projects that fiber can make. It factors in your target yarn weight and plying method to show feasible projects.

  • Enter the ounces of fiber you have or plan to buy
  • Calculator estimates total yarn yardage after plying loss
  • Shows which projects are feasible: hat, scarf, socks, shawl, sweater
  • Helps avoid the "not enough for anything" problem at fiber festivals
  • Accounts for fiber type scour yield if buying raw fleece
Q

How many yards per pound does each yarn weight produce?

Yards per pound varies dramatically by yarn weight. Lace yarn yields 2,600+ yards per pound, while super bulky yields under 300. These are averages for clean, prepared fiber spun as singles. Plying reduces these numbers by 10–20%.

  • Lace: 2,600+ yards per pound; Fingering: 1,600–2,600 yards per pound
  • Sport: 1,200–1,600 yards per pound; DK: 1,000–1,200 yards per pound
  • Worsted: 500–1,100 yards per pound (most popular for sweaters and hats)
  • Bulky: 300–500 yards per pound; Super Bulky: under 300 yards per pound
  • Plying reduces all yields by 10–20% depending on method
