Each strand needs 60×4 + 20 + 15 = 275 cm. Folded in half gives 550 cm per cut piece. 8 cut pieces × 5.5m = 44.0m total.

Per strand: 80×4 + 15 + 15 = 350 cm. Folded: 700 cm per cut piece. 4 pieces × 7.0m = 28.0m total. 4mm cord gives great knot definition for plant hangers.

Per strand: 180×5 + 30 + 15 = 945 cm. Folded: 1,890 cm per cut piece. 20 pieces at 18.9m each. Spiral knots use more cord than square knots — budget accordingly.
Multiply your finished project height by the knot multiplier (e.g., ×4 for square knots), then add fringe length and mounting allowance. Since cords are folded in half over the dowel, multiply by 2 for the cut length. Our calculator does this automatically.
Square knots use about 4× the finished length. Spiral knots use 5×. Half hitches use 3.5×. Gathering knots use 3×. Berry knots use 5×. Plain/no knots use 1.5×. These are estimates — tight knotters may need more.
3mm cord is the most versatile for wall hangings and plant hangers. Use 2mm for jewelry and keychains, 4-5mm for larger wall hangings and curtains, and 6mm for rugs and large statement pieces. Thicker cord shows knot detail better.
A medium wall hanging (60cm tall, 40cm wide) with 16 cords of square knots and 20cm fringe typically needs about 35-45 meters of 3mm cord. Larger pieces or denser knotting will need proportionally more.
A standard plant hanger (80cm long) with 8 cords of square knots needs approximately 25-35 meters of cord. Longer hangers or more complex patterns with spiral knots will require more material.
Always buy 10-20% more cord than calculated. Tight knotters use more cord, and some knots consume more than average. Running out mid-project means color matching issues since dye lots vary between batches.
