Example Calculations

1Standard Home (120 ft roof edge, 4 corners)

Inputs

Roof Edge Length120 ft
Board Width6 inches
Board Length16 ft
Corners4
Drip EdgeIncluded
Cost per Foot$3

Result

Boards Needed8 boards
Total Linear Feet122.0 ft
Drip Edge120.0 ft
Nails240
Total Cost$565

Boards = ceil(120/16) = 8. Linear feet = 120 + (4 x 0.5) = 122. Material = 122 x $3 = $366. Drip edge = 120 x $1.50 = $180. Nails = 240 at ~$19. Total = $565.

2Large Home (200 ft roof edge, 6 corners)

Inputs

Roof Edge Length200 ft
Board Width8 inches
Board Length16 ft
Corners6
Drip EdgeIncluded
Cost per Foot$3

Result

Boards Needed13 boards
Total Linear Feet203.0 ft
Drip Edge200.0 ft
Nails400
Total Cost$941

Boards = ceil(200/16) = 13. Linear feet = 200 + (6 x 0.5) = 203. Material = 203 x $3 = $609. Drip edge = 200 x $1.50 = $300. Nails = 400 at ~$32. Total = $941.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How do I calculate how much fascia board I need?

Measure the total length of all roof edges where fascia will be installed. Divide by the board length (usually 16 ft) to get the number of boards. Add 0.5 ft per corner for overlap cuts.

  • Formula: Total Roof Edge Length ÷ Board Length = Number of Boards
  • Standard boards: 16 ft long; some suppliers carry 12 ft or 20 ft
  • Add 0.5 ft per corner for mitered overlap joints
  • Measure each roof edge separately – eaves, rakes, and returns
  • Buy 1–2 extra boards for mistakes and future repairs
Q

What size fascia board do I need?

Most homes use 1x6 (5.5 inch actual) or 1x8 (7.25 inch actual) fascia boards. The board should fully cover the rafter tails. Match the width to your existing fascia or rafter depth.

  • Nominal 1×6 = 5.5" actual width – most common residential size
  • Nominal 1×8 = 7.25" actual width – deeper eaves, 2-story homes
  • Nominal 1×10 = 9.25" actual width – steep-pitch roofs, commercial
  • Board must fully cover rafter tail ends with no gap showing
  • Match existing width when replacing – avoids rework on soffit and drip edge
Board Size (Nominal)Actual WidthTypical UseCost/ft
1×65.5"Ranch homes, standard eaves$1.50–$3
1×87.25"2-story homes, deeper rafter tails$2–$4
1×109.25"Steep roofs, commercial$3–$5
2×6 (sub-fascia)5.5"Structural backing board$2–$3.50
Q

Should I install drip edge with new fascia?

Yes. Drip edge protects the fascia board from water damage by directing runoff away from the board and into the gutter. It costs about $1.50 per linear foot and significantly extends fascia life.

  • Drip edge is code-required (IRC R905.2.8.5) for asphalt shingle roofs
  • Cost: ~$1–$2/ft for aluminum, $2–$4/ft for galvanized steel
  • Installs between shingles/underlayment and the fascia board top edge
  • Without drip edge, water wicks behind fascia and causes rot within 3–5 years
  • Type C (L-shaped) is most common; Type D (T-shaped) offers extra kickout
Q

What is the best material for fascia boards?

PVC and composite fascia last 25-50 years with zero maintenance. Wood fascia is cheapest but needs painting every 3-5 years. Aluminum fascia (wrap) covers existing wood and prevents rot.

  • Wood (pine/cedar): $1.50–$4/ft – cheapest upfront, prime + paint required
  • PVC (cellular): $3–$6/ft – rot-proof, paintable, cuts like wood
  • Composite: $4–$7/ft – wood-look grain, no maintenance
  • Aluminum wrap: $2–$4/ft – covers existing wood, prevents rot from reaching board
  • Cedar lasts 15–20 years unpainted; pine rots in 5–8 years without paint
