Shrinkage Tips

Pre-Wash: Always pre-wash natural fibers (cotton, linen, wool) before cutting. Most shrinkage occurs in the first wash.
Heat Matters: Hot water and high dryer heat cause maximum shrinkage. Wash and dry the same way you plan to launder the finished item.
Grain Direction: Fabric shrinks more along the length (warp) than the width (weft). Always measure both directions separately.
Raw Denim: Unwashed denim can shrink up to 10%. Sanforized denim is pre-shrunk and typically only shrinks 1–3%.

Example Calculations

1Cotton Shrinkage Test — 36" × 45" Swatch

Inputs

ModeCalculate Shrinkage
Fabric TypeCotton
Original Length36 inches
Original Width45 inches
After-Wash Length34.5 inches
After-Wash Width43.6 inches

Result

Length Shrinkage4.2%
Width Shrinkage3.1%
Total Area Loss7.1%

This cotton swatch shrank 4.2% in length and 3.1% in width, which is typical for unwashed cotton. Total area lost is about 7.1%, meaning a 36×45" piece became 34.5×43.6" after the first wash.

2Cotton Cut Size — 36" × 45" Finished

Inputs

ModeCalculate Cut Size
Fabric TypeCotton
Desired Finished Length36 inches
Desired Finished Width45 inches

Result

Cut Length37.5 inches
Cut Width46.4 inches
Extra Length+1.5 inches
Extra Width+1.4 inches

To end up with 36×45 inches after washing cotton (4% length, 3% width shrinkage), cut at 37.5×46.4 inches. That extra 1.5 inches in length and 1.4 inches in width compensates for shrinkage.

3Wool Cut Size — 60" × 45" Finished

Inputs

ModeCalculate Cut Size
Fabric TypeWool
Desired Finished Length60 inches
Desired Finished Width45 inches

Result

Cut Length64.5 inches
Cut Width47.4 inches
Extra Length+4.5 inches
Extra Width+2.4 inches

Wool’s higher 7% length shrinkage means cutting 4.5 inches extra on a 60-inch piece. Width shrinkage at 5% adds 2.4 inches. Pre-wash wool on a cold delicate cycle to get this shrinkage out before your project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much does cotton fabric shrink?

Cotton typically shrinks 3–5% in length and 2–4% in width after the first hot wash and dry cycle. The average is about 4% lengthwise. Pre-washed or "sanforized" cotton shrinks less than 1%. Always pre-wash cotton before cutting to avoid surprises in your finished project.

  • Standard cotton: 3–5% length shrinkage, 2–4% width shrinkage
  • Pre-washed/sanforized cotton: <1% shrinkage
  • Quilting cotton: typically 3–4% after first wash
  • Hot water and high heat dryer cause maximum shrinkage
  • Most shrinkage occurs in the first wash — subsequent washes shrink very little

Q

How do I calculate fabric shrinkage percentage?

Measure a swatch before and after washing. Shrinkage % = (original − washed) / original × 100. For example, a 36-inch piece that measures 34.5 inches after washing has shrunk (36 − 34.5) / 36 × 100 = 4.17%. Always measure both length and width separately since they often shrink at different rates.

  • Formula: shrinkage % = (original − washed) / original × 100
  • Example: 36" original, 34.5" washed = 4.17% shrinkage
  • Measure both length (warp) and width (weft) — they differ
  • Cut a 12" × 12" test swatch for easy percentage math
  • Wash the test swatch the same way you’ll wash the finished item
Q

How do I calculate cut size to account for shrinkage?

Divide your desired finished measurement by (1 − shrinkage/100). For example, if you want 36 inches finished and cotton shrinks 4%, cut at 36 / (1 − 0.04) = 36 / 0.96 = 37.5 inches. This ensures the fabric ends up at your target size after washing.

  • Formula: cut size = desired size / (1 − shrinkage% / 100)
  • 36" finished at 4% shrinkage: cut at 37.5" (add 1.5")
  • 45" finished at 5% shrinkage: cut at 47.4" (add 2.4")
  • Apply the formula to both length and width separately
  • For quilts, calculate per-block to avoid compounding errors

36"37.1"37.9"38.7"
45"46.4"47.4"48.4"
60"61.9"63.2"64.5"
Q

Does wool shrink more than cotton?

Yes. Wool shrinks 5–10% on average (7% typical), compared to cotton’s 3–5%. Wool also felts when agitated in hot water, which causes irreversible shrinkage beyond simple relaxation. Always hand-wash or use a wool cycle with cold water and lay flat to dry.

  • Wool average: 7% length, 5% width — can reach 10% in hot water
  • Cotton average: 4% length, 3% width — maxes out around 5%
  • Wool felting is permanent — fibers interlock and cannot be reversed
  • Superwash wool is chemically treated to resist shrinkage (<2%)
  • Polyester blended with wool reduces shrinkage proportionally
Q

Should I pre-wash fabric before cutting?

Yes, always pre-wash natural fibers (cotton, linen, wool, rayon) before cutting. Most shrinkage happens in the first wash. If you skip pre-washing and the finished garment shrinks, seams pucker and the fit changes. Polyester and polyester blends (>50% poly) rarely need pre-washing.

  • Pre-wash cotton and linen in hot water to get maximum shrinkage out first
  • Pre-wash wool on cold/delicate cycle or hand-wash — never hot
  • Polyester: optional — shrinks <1% and rarely affects fit
  • Rayon: always pre-wash — can shrink 3–8% and distort badly
  • Denim: pre-wash raw/unwashed denim — up to 10% shrinkage if unsanforized
Q

Does fabric shrink more in length or width?

Fabric typically shrinks more along the length (warp direction) than the width (weft direction). This is because warp yarns are under higher tension during weaving. Cotton shrinks about 4% in length but only 3% in width. Always measure and calculate shrinkage for both directions independently.

  • Length (warp) shrinks more because yarns are tensioned during weaving
  • Width (weft) shrinks less — yarns are woven more loosely
  • Cotton: ~4% length vs ~3% width on average
  • Linen: ~5% length vs ~4% width on average
  • Always measure both directions — never assume they shrink equally
