Long seams and heavier leather justify the larger multiplier because extra thread is far cheaper than running short midway through a hand-sewn belt.
A common starting point is roughly 3.5 to 4 times the seam length. Thin leather can live near the lower end, while thicker stacks, tighter curves, or wider thread usually need more.
Stitch count changes with SPI, but leather thickness and the thread multiplier often have a larger effect on total consumption. That is why the calculator lets you tune the factor, not just the stitch count.
Very long seams, often around 24 to 30 inches or more, are easier to manage in separate sections. That reduces tangling, fraying, and fatigue without changing the total thread needed very much.
Small 25 to 30 yard spools work for wallets and card holders, but belts, bags, and batch production quickly benefit from larger spools. The calculator shows whether your plan spills into a second spool.
