Grain direction: Paper grain must run parallel to the spine. Pages with cross-grain curl and resist turning.

How do I calculate book spine width?

Spine width equals the number of sheets multiplied by the thickness of each sheet. For 80 gsm paper, each sheet is approximately 0.1 mm thick. A 200-page book (100 sheets) at 80 gsm has a spine of about 10 mm (0.39 inches). Heavier paper produces thicker spines.

  • 60 gsm (thin): ~0.075 mm/sheet — 100 sheets = 7.5 mm spine
  • 80 gsm (standard): ~0.100 mm/sheet — 100 sheets = 10 mm spine
  • 100 gsm (premium): ~0.125 mm/sheet — 100 sheets = 12.5 mm spine
  • 120 gsm (heavy): ~0.150 mm/sheet — 100 sheets = 15 mm spine

What size cover boards do I need for bookbinding?

Cover boards should be slightly larger than the text block: add 1/8 inch (3 mm) to the width and 1/4 inch (6 mm) to the height (1/8 inch overhang top and bottom). For a 6" × 9" book, boards are 6.125" × 9.25". Use 2.2 mm (0.087") thick binder board for standard books.

  • Width: page width + 1/8" (0.125") for the fore-edge overhang
  • Height: page height + 1/4" (0.250") total for top and bottom overhang
  • Standard board thickness: 2.2 mm (0.087") for books up to 300 pages
  • Heavy books (300+ pages): use 3 mm (0.118") board for rigidity
  • Cut boards with grain running parallel to the spine to prevent warping

How much book cloth do I need for case binding?

The cloth must wrap around both boards plus the spine with a 3/4-inch turn-in on all edges. For a 6" × 9" book with a 0.4" spine: cloth width = (2 × 6.125) + 0.4 + 1.5 = 14.15 inches. Cloth height = 9.25 + 1.5 = 10.75 inches.

  • Cloth width = (2 × board width) + spine width + (2 × 3/4" turn-in)
  • Cloth height = board height + (2 × 3/4" turn-in)
  • Book cloth costs $8–$15 per yard (typically 42–54" wide)
  • Decorative paper can substitute for cloth at $3–$8 per sheet
  • Add 1/4" extra to each measurement for trimming allowance

What is the difference between perfect, coptic, and case binding?

Perfect binding glues pages to a flexible spine (paperbacks). Coptic stitch sews signatures together with an exposed spine that allows the book to lay flat. Case binding wraps a rigid hardcover around sewn signatures for the most durable result.

  • Perfect binding: glued spine, fastest and cheapest, pages can fall out over time
  • Coptic stitch: exposed chain stitch, book lays completely flat, no spine cover
  • Case binding: hardcover with cloth/paper wrap, most durable, traditional look
  • Japanese stab binding: decorative side-stitching, pages do not lay flat
  • Case binding costs the most in materials (boards + cloth + endpapers)

How many signatures do I need for a book?

A signature is a group of folded sheets sewn together. Standard signatures contain 4–6 sheets (16–24 pages). A 200-page book has 100 sheets, which makes about 20 signatures of 5 sheets each. Fewer, thicker signatures are easier to sew but create a less flexible spine.

  • 4 sheets/signature (16 pages): best for thick paper (100+ gsm)
  • 5 sheets/signature (20 pages): standard for most bookbinding
  • 6 sheets/signature (24 pages): works well with thin paper (60–80 gsm)
