Turning Tips

1. Always start with a blank 10–20% larger than the finished piece
2. Green (wet) wood blanks are cheaper but must be rough-turned then dried
3. Bowl blanks are cut face-grain; the blank diameter equals the bowl diameter
4. Seal end grain with wax emulsion to prevent cracking during drying
5. For pen blanks, buy pre-cut blanks; custom cutting wastes expensive wood

18" Walnut Bowl

Inputs

Finished Diameter8 inches
Finished Height4 inches
Project TypeBowl
WoodBlack Walnut

Result

Blank Size9.2" × 5"
Board Feet2.94
Blank Cost$29.40

Bowl blank: 8" × 1.15 = 9.2" diameter, 4" × 1.25 = 5" depth. BF = (9.2 × 9.2 × 5) / 144 = 2.94 BF × $10/BF.

Inputs

Finished Diameter3 inches
Finished Height10 inches
Project TypeSpindle
Quantity2

Result

Blank Size3.3" × 12"
Board Feet (each)0.91
Total Cost$10.89

Spindle: 3" × 1.10 = 3.3" diameter, 10" × 1.20 = 12" length. BF = (3.3² × 12) / 144 = 0.91 × 2 × $6/BF.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How big should a wood blank be for turning?

A turning blank should be 10–25% larger than the finished piece in every dimension. Bowls need 15% larger diameter and 25% more depth for tenon and waste. Spindles need 10–15% extra length for drive and live center grip.

  • Bowls: blank diameter = finished diameter × 1.15, depth × 1.25
  • Spindles: length × 1.20 for drive center waste
  • Platters: diameter × 1.15, depth × 1.50 (very shallow)
  • Hollow forms: diameter × 1.20 for extra hollowing clearance
Q

What is the best wood for turning?

Maple and walnut are the most popular turning woods. Maple is light-colored with tight grain that takes finishes beautifully, while walnut offers rich dark tones and turns easily.

  • Maple: tight grain, light color, takes finish well, $6/BF
  • Walnut: rich color, easy to turn, $10/BF
  • Cherry: warm tones, darkens with age, $8/BF
  • Exotic woods (padauk, purpleheart): vivid colors, $15–25/BF

Q

How do I calculate board feet for a turning blank?

For a square blank: Board Feet = (Width × Width × Length) / 144, where all dimensions are in inches. For round blanks, use the square that circumscribes the circle.

  • Square blank: BF = (W × W × L) / 144
  • Round blank: use diameter as width in the formula
  • Typical 8" bowl blank: ~4 board feet
  • Green (wet) blanks cost 30–50% less than kiln-dried
Q

Should I buy green or kiln-dried turning blanks?

Green (wet) wood is cheaper and easier to turn but must be rough-turned, dried for 6–12 months, then re-turned to final shape. Kiln-dried wood can be turned to final shape in one session.

  • Green wood: 30–50% cheaper, easier cutting, needs drying
  • Kiln-dried: more expensive, immediate final turning, stable
  • Rough-turn green bowls to 1" wall thickness, then dry
  • Seal end grain with wax emulsion to slow drying and prevent cracks
