Carving Tips

1. Basswood is the gold standard for carving; soft, consistent, and holds detail
2. Draw your design on all four faces of the block before cutting away waste
3. For 3D carvings, rough out the shape with a bandsaw before hand-carving
4. Avoid kiln-dried wood for large carvings; air-dried wood checks less
5. Seal the end grain of blocks with wax immediately to prevent cracking

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How big should my carving block be?

A carving block should be 10–25% larger than the finished piece in every dimension. In-the-round (3D) carvings need 25% extra on each side, while chip carving on flat boards needs only 10% extra.

  • Relief carving: 15% wider, 50% deeper than design depth
  • In-the-round: 25% larger on all three dimensions
  • Chip carving: 10% larger, flat board stock
  • Whittling: 15% larger, often from a branch or stick
Q

What is the best wood for carving?

Basswood (American linden) is the gold standard for hand carving. It is very soft, has a fine, consistent grain, and holds intricate detail. Butternut is a close second with a warmer color.

  • Basswood: softest, most popular, fine grain, $7/BF
  • Butternut: warm tone, easy to carve, $8/BF
  • White pine: affordable, available, some resin pockets
  • Mahogany: medium hardness, rich color, fine detail possible

BasswoodVery soft$7Detail work, figures, birds
ButternutSoft$8Signs, panels, animals
White PineSoft$4Practice, large carvings
WalnutMedium-hard$10Dramatic pieces, furniture
Q

How do I prepare a carving block?

Start with kiln-dried or well-seasoned wood to prevent cracking. Square the block on a bandsaw or table saw, draw your design on all four faces, then rough out the basic shape before detail carving.

  • Use kiln-dried wood (8–12% moisture content)
  • Square all six faces on a table saw or bandsaw
  • Draw the profile on front, side, and top faces
  • Rough out with a bandsaw, then hand-carve details
Q

How much does carving wood cost?

Basswood blocks cost $7–12 per board foot depending on quality. A typical 6" × 8" × 3" block for a small figure uses about 1 board foot and costs $7–10. Exotic woods cost $15–25+ per board foot.

  • Basswood: $7–$12/BF, most common carving wood
  • Butternut: $8–$14/BF, beautiful natural color
  • White pine: $4–$6/BF, cheapest softwood option
  • Pre-cut carving blanks cost 50–100% more than raw lumber
