Finishing Tips

1. Sand between coats with 220–320 grit for better adhesion
2. Apply stain before topcoat; never mix stain and polyurethane in one coat
3. Softwood absorbs 30% more finish—use a pre-stain conditioner to prevent blotching
4. Thin the first coat 10–15% with mineral spirits for better penetration into the grain
5. Allow final coat to cure 24–72 hours before placing objects on the surface

FinishPolyurethane
WoodHardwood (Oak)
Coats3

Result

Finish Needed1.20 qt
Per Coat0.40 qt
Cost$14.40

50 ft² / 125 ft²/qt = 0.40 qt per coat × 3 coats = 1.20 qt × $12/qt = $14.40.

2Pine Bookshelf (30 ft², danish oil, 2 coats)

Inputs

Area30 ft²
FinishDanish Oil
WoodSoftwood (Pine)
Coats2

Result

Finish Needed0.78 qt
Per Coat0.39 qt
Cost$9.36

Adjusted coverage = 100 / 1.3 = 76.9 ft²/qt. 30 / 76.9 = 0.39 qt/coat × 2 = 0.78 qt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much polyurethane do I need?

One quart of polyurethane covers about 125 ft² on hardwood per coat. A 50 ft² project with 3 coats needs about 1.2 quarts. Softwood absorbs 30% more, so the same project on pine needs ~1.56 quarts.

  • Polyurethane: ~125 ft²/qt on hardwood per coat
  • Lacquer: ~150 ft²/qt per coat, faster drying
  • Oil stain: ~100 ft²/qt, 1 coat usually sufficient
  • Tung oil: ~80 ft²/qt, 3 coats for full protection

Tung Oil80 ft²34–6 hrs
Q

Does wood type affect finish coverage?

Yes. Softwoods (pine, cedar) absorb 30% more finish than hardwoods (oak, maple). MDF absorbs 50% more due to its porous surface. Apply a pre-stain conditioner on softwood to prevent blotchy absorption.

  • Hardwood: 1.0x absorption — baseline coverage
  • Softwood: 1.3x absorption — 30% more finish needed
  • Plywood: 0.9x absorption — smooth surface, less absorption
  • MDF: 1.5x absorption — very porous, seal first
Q

How many coats of finish do I need?

Most finishes need 2–3 coats for full protection. Polyurethane and lacquer need 3 coats. Oil stains need 1–2. Tung oil needs 3+ for a durable finish. Sand between coats with 220–320 grit.

  • Polyurethane: 3 coats minimum for durability
  • Lacquer: 3 coats, quick dry allows same-day application
  • Oil stain: 1–2 coats (topcoat separately)
  • Danish oil: 2 coats, wipe-on/wipe-off method
Q

Should I use oil-based or water-based finish?

Oil-based polyurethane is more durable and gives a warm amber tone. Water-based is crystal clear, dries faster, and has lower VOCs. For high-traffic surfaces (floors, tabletops), oil-based is preferred for its scratch resistance.

  • Oil-based: warm tone, more durable, slower drying, higher VOC
  • Water-based: crystal clear, fast drying, low VOC
  • Oil-based over dark stains: enhances warmth
  • Water-based over light stains: preserves color accuracy
