1. Dampen veg-tan leather with water before dyeing for more even absorption

How much dye do I need for leather?

Spirit-based dye covers about 8 ft² per ounce on veg-tan leather. A 4 ft² project with 2 coats needs about 1.0 oz of dye. Suede absorbs 40% more due to its napped surface. Chrome-tan absorbs 40% less and works better with acrylic paint.

How many coats of dye does leather need?

Most projects need 2 coats for even, saturated color. Light colors may need only 1 coat. Very dark or black dyes on light leather may need 3–4 coats. Let each coat dry completely before applying the next.
