10 × (4 × 4) = 160 sq in = 1.11 ft². 300" total cuts / 480" per blade < 1, but round up to 1 blade.
A single #5 reverse-tooth blade cuts roughly 30–50 linear feet of plywood before dulling. For a project with 60 inches of total cuts per pattern, plan on 1–2 blades per pattern depending on material hardness.
Reverse-tooth blades are the most popular choice because they cut clean on both top and bottom surfaces. Skip-tooth blades cut faster for rougher work, and spiral blades allow cutting in any direction without rotating the material.
| Blade | Cut Speed | Edge Quality | Best Material |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skip-Tooth | Fast | Medium | Softwood, general |
| Reverse-Tooth | Medium | Excellent | Plywood, hardwood |
| Spiral | Slow | Rough | Fretwork, 360° cuts |
| Crown-Tooth | Medium | Good | Hardwood, thick stock |
Baltic birch plywood (1/4" or 3/8") is the most popular scroll saw material. It has consistent layers, cuts cleanly, and comes in flat sheets that lie flat on the table without warping.
Trace the total cutting path of your pattern with a piece of string, then measure the string. For simple silhouettes, the perimeter is a good estimate. Interior cuts add significantly to total cut length.
