100 / 7.0 lbs per gal = 14.29 gal. Per bucket = 7.0 × 5 = 35 lbs. Containers = ceil(100/35) = 3. Bushels = 100/60 = 1.67. At 10% moisture (<12% max), shelf life = 30+ years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How many pounds of grain fit in a 5-gallon bucket?

A 5-gallon bucket holds 33–36 lbs of dense grain like wheat or rice, but only 22.5 lbs of oats due to lower density. The key factor is lbs per gallon: wheat packs at 7.0 lbs/gal, while oats are only 4.5 lbs/gal.

  • Hard Red Wheat: 35 lbs per 5-gallon bucket (7.0 lbs/gal)
  • White Rice: 36 lbs per 5-gallon bucket (7.2 lbs/gal)
  • Corn: 32.5 lbs (6.5 lbs/gal)
  • Oats: 22.5 lbs (4.5 lbs/gal) — lightest common grain
  • Barley: 30 lbs (6.0 lbs/gal)

Q

What moisture content is safe for grain storage?

Most grains must be below 12–13% moisture for safe long-term storage. Above this level, mold and insects thrive, rapidly degrading grain quality. Use a grain moisture meter ($30–50) to test before sealing containers. If moisture is too high, spread grain in thin layers and air-dry before storing.

  • Wheat, rice, oats: 12% maximum moisture
  • Corn: 13% maximum (slightly higher tolerance)
  • Below 10%: ideal for 30-year storage
  • 12–14%: safe for 1–5 year storage
  • Above 14%: mold risk, must dry before storing
Q

How long does stored grain last?

Hard wheat, white rice, and dried corn last 30+ years when stored in sealed containers with oxygen absorbers below 12% moisture. Oats last about 30 years in ideal conditions. Brown rice is the exception at only 1 year due to its oil content. Barley stores for about 8 years.

  • 30+ years: hard wheat, white rice, dried corn, oats, pasta
  • 10 years: rye, corn (sealed)
  • 8 years: barley, hulled
  • 1 year: brown rice (oils go rancid)
  • Key factors: moisture <12%, oxygen removed, cool storage (<70°F)
Q

Should I use oxygen absorbers or desiccants?

Use oxygen absorbers, not desiccants, for grain storage. Oxygen absorbers remove O2 (which causes oxidation and feeds insects) while desiccants remove moisture. Grain should already be at safe moisture before sealing. Use one 300cc oxygen absorber per 5-gallon bucket.

  • Oxygen absorbers: remove O2, kill insect eggs, prevent oxidation
  • Desiccants: remove moisture — NOT needed if grain is already dry
  • 300cc absorber per 5-gallon bucket of grain
  • 2000cc absorber per 55-gallon drum
  • Seal immediately after adding absorber — they activate on air contact
