110 Sugar Maples, 18" Diameter, Bucket Collection
Inputs
Result
18" trees = 2 taps each. 10 trees x 2 = 20 taps. Sap: 20 x 10 = 200 gal. Syrup: 200 / 34.4 = 5.8 gal = 23.3 qt. Value: 23.3 x $15 = $349.

25" trees = 3 taps each. 5 trees x 3 = 15 taps. Sap: 15 x 10 x 1.5 (vacuum) = 225 gal. Syrup: 225 / 34.4 = 6.5 gal = 26.2 qt.
The number of taps depends on tree diameter at breast height (DBH). Trees 10–17 inches get 1 tap, 18–24 inches can support 2 taps, and 25+ inches can handle 3 taps maximum. Over-tapping stresses the tree and reduces long-term sap production. Always measure at 4.5 feet above ground.
| Diameter | Max Taps | Sap per Tap (Sugar Maple) |
|---|---|---|
| 10–17" | 1 | 10 gal/season |
| 18–24" | 2 | 10 gal/tap/season |
| 25"+ | 3 | 10 gal/tap/season |
A single tap on a Sugar Maple produces about 10 gallons of sap per season. With a 34:1 sap-to-syrup ratio, that gives roughly 0.3 gallons (1.2 quarts) of syrup per tap. A large tree with 3 taps can yield about 1 gallon of syrup. Red and Silver Maples produce less syrup per tap due to lower sugar content.
Basic tapping equipment includes spiles ($2–5 each), collection buckets or bags ($8–15 per tap), and a drill with 7/16" or 5/16" bit. Tubing systems cost $12–20 per tap but dramatically reduce labor. Vacuum tubing adds 50% more sap yield.
Tap when daytime temperatures consistently rise above 40°F and nighttime temps drop below 32°F. This freeze-thaw cycle drives sap flow. In most of the northern US, this is late February through early April. Tap too early and the holes may dry out; tap too late and sap quality declines.
