Example Calculations

1Unclipped Horse at 30°F

Inputs

Body Measurement77 inches
Temperature30°F
Clip StatusUnclipped
HousingTurnout (outdoor)

Result

Blanket Size78 inches
Recommended Fill200g (medium weight)
TypeWaterproof turnout

A 77-inch measurement rounds up to a size 78 blanket. At 30°F with a full winter coat, a medium-weight 200g turnout provides adequate warmth without overheating.

2Body-Clipped Horse in Cold Weather

Inputs

Body Measurement74 inches
Temperature15°F
Clip StatusFull body clip
HousingTurnout (outdoor)

Result

Blanket Size74 inches
Recommended Fill400g (heavyweight + liner)
TypeWaterproof heavyweight turnout

A body-clipped horse at 15°F needs maximum protection. A 400g heavyweight turnout or a 300g turnout with a 100g liner provides the insulation a clipped horse lacks naturally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How do you measure a horse for a blanket size?

Place a soft measuring tape at the center of the chest (base of neck), run it along the widest part of the shoulder and barrel to the point of the buttock, then subtract 4 inches (10 cm) from the total. Most blanket brands sell in 3-inch or 2-inch increments. If between sizes, go up.

  • Start at center of chest (where the blanket buckle sits)
  • Run tape over the widest part of shoulder, along barrel, to the tail
  • Subtract 4 inches (10 cm) from the raw measurement for blanket size
  • Most horses measure 74–80 inches; pony 54–66, draft 84–90
  • Quarter Horses often need larger sizes for their build despite shorter height
Q

What weight horse blanket do I need by temperature?

Blanket weight depends on temperature, whether the horse is clipped, and whether it lives outdoors or in a stable. Unclipped horses with winter coats often need lighter blankets or sheets, while body-clipped horses need heavier fill.

  • Above 50°F: no blanket or lightweight sheet (0g fill)
  • 40–50°F: lightweight turnout (100–150g fill)
  • 25–40°F: medium weight (200–250g fill)
  • 10–25°F: heavyweight (300–400g fill)
  • Below 10°F: heavyweight + liner or stable blanket underneath

Q

What is the difference between a turnout and a stable blanket?

Turnout blankets are waterproof and designed for horses living outdoors. Stable blankets are not waterproof but are softer and more breathable for horses kept in stalls. Using a stable blanket outdoors in rain will soak through and chill the horse.

  • Turnout: waterproof outer shell (1200–1680 denier), tail flap, leg straps
  • Stable: breathable quilted fabric, surcingle belly straps
  • Turnout sheets: waterproof but no fill (rain protection only)
  • Coolers: fleece or wool, used after exercise to wick sweat
Q

How many blankets does a horse need?

Most horse owners need 2–3 blankets to cover the range of winter temperatures: a lightweight sheet, a medium-weight turnout, and a heavyweight for the coldest days. Budget $150–$500 per blanket depending on quality.

  • Minimum set: 1 medium turnout + 1 stable blanket
  • Full set: sheet + light turnout + medium turnout + heavy turnout
  • Budget blankets: $75–$150 (may need replacing annually)
  • Premium blankets: $250–$500+ (last 3–5 seasons with care)
  • Waterproof spray extends blanket life ($10–$15 per can)
