Example Calculations

1Medium Dog at 16 Weeks (15 lbs)

Inputs

AnimalDog
Size GroupMedium (25–50 lb)
SexMale
NeuteredNo
Age16 weeks
Current Weight15 lbs

Result

Predicted Adult Weight36.2 lbs
Growth Complete43%
Remaining Gain21.2 lbs
Growth Rate0.59 lb/week
Full Maturity12 months

Medium dog at 16 weeks: multiplier = 2.3. Predicted = 15 × 2.3 = 34.5 lbs. Male adjustment (+5%) = 34.5 × 1.05 = 36.2 lbs. Growth complete = 1/2.3 = 43%. Remaining = 36.2 - 15 = 21.2 lbs over 36 weeks = 0.59 lb/wk.

2Spayed Female Cat at 6 Months (5 lbs)

Inputs

AnimalCat
Size GroupMedium (8–12 lb)
SexFemale
SpayedYes
Age24 weeks
Current Weight5 lbs

Result

Predicted Adult Weight7.3 lbs
Growth Complete71%
Remaining Gain2.3 lbs
Growth Rate1.3 oz/week
Full Maturity12 months

Medium cat at 24 weeks: multiplier = 1.4. Predicted = 5 × 1.4 = 7.0 lbs. Female adj (-5%) = 6.65, spayed adj (+10%) = 7.3 lbs. Growth 1/1.4 = 71% complete. Remaining 2.3 lbs over 28 weeks = 1.3 oz/week.

3Giant Breed Puppy at 20 Weeks (30 lbs)

Inputs

AnimalDog
Size GroupGiant (80+ lb)
SexMale
NeuteredNo
Age20 weeks
Current Weight30 lbs

Result

Predicted Adult Weight78.8 lbs
Growth Complete40%
Remaining Gain48.8 lbs
Growth Rate0.64 lb/week
Full Maturity22 months

Giant dog at 20 weeks: multiplier = 2.5. Predicted = 30 × 2.5 = 75 lbs. Male adj (+5%) = 78.8 lbs. Growth = 1/2.5 = 40%. Remaining 48.8 lbs over 76 weeks = 0.64 lb/wk. Full maturity at ~96 weeks (22 months).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How accurate are puppy weight predictions?

Growth multiplier estimates are typically within 10–15% of actual adult weight for purebred dogs when size group is correctly identified. Mixed breeds may vary more due to genetics from multiple size groups.

  • Purebred predictions: ±10–15% accuracy when size group matches
  • Mixed breed predictions: ±15–25% due to genetic variability
  • Most accurate window: 16–24 weeks when growth rate stabilizes
  • Least accurate: under 8 weeks when puppies are too young for reliable projection
  • Male puppies typically weigh 5–10% more than females of the same breed
Age RangeAccuracyNotes
8–12 weeks±20–25%Still too early for reliable estimates
12–16 weeks±15–20%Growth rate becoming more predictable
16–24 weeks±10–15%Best prediction window for most breeds
24+ weeks±5–10%Most growth is complete for small/medium dogs
Q

When do puppies stop growing?

Toy breeds reach adult weight around 10 months, small breeds at 12 months, medium at 14 months, large at 18 months, and giant breeds may grow until 24 months. Females typically mature 1–2 months earlier than males.

  • Toy breeds (Chihuahua, Yorkie): 10 months to adult weight
  • Small breeds (Beagle, Cocker): 12 months to adult weight
  • Medium breeds (Bulldog, Border Collie): 14 months
  • Large breeds (Lab, Golden, GSD): 18 months
  • Giant breeds (Great Dane, Mastiff): 24 months, may fill out until 36 months
Q

Does neutering or spaying affect adult weight?

Yes. Neutering or spaying before maturity can increase adult weight by 5–10% due to hormonal changes that affect growth plate closure. Early-neutered dogs tend to grow slightly taller and heavier than intact dogs.

  • Neutered/spayed pets average 5–10% heavier than intact peers
  • Early neutering (before 6 months) may increase height due to delayed growth plate closure
  • Later neutering (after 12 months) has minimal effect on adult size
  • Spayed females tend to gain more relative weight than neutered males
  • This calculator adds a 10% adjustment for neutered/spayed pets
Q

How do I know my puppy's size group?

Size group is based on expected adult weight. Toy: under 12 lbs, Small: 12–25 lbs, Medium: 25–50 lbs, Large: 50–80 lbs, Giant: 80+ lbs. If you know the breed, look up the breed standard weight.

  • Toy (< 12 lb adult): Chihuahua, Yorkie, Pomeranian, Maltese
  • Small (12–25 lb): Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Dachshund, Shih Tzu
  • Medium (25–50 lb): Bulldog, Border Collie, Australian Shepherd
  • Large (50–80 lb): Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd
  • Giant (80+ lb): Great Dane, Mastiff, Saint Bernard, Newfoundland

Small12–25 lb12 monthsBeagle, Cocker
Medium25–50 lb14 monthsBulldog, Aussie
Large50–80 lb18 monthsLab, Golden
Giant80+ lb24 monthsGreat Dane, Mastiff
Q

How is the growth multiplier calculated?

At each age, a multiplier represents how many times the current weight will increase to reach adult weight. For example, a medium dog at 12 weeks has a 3.0x multiplier, so a 10 lb puppy is predicted to reach 30 lbs.

  • Multiplier = predicted adult weight / current weight
  • Values decrease as the puppy ages and approaches full growth
  • Between data points, linear interpolation provides smooth estimates
  • A multiplier of 1.0 means the dog has reached predicted adult weight
  • Adjustments are applied for sex (±5%) and neutering (+10%)
Q

When do kittens reach their adult weight?

Small cats (Siamese) reach full size around 10 months, medium cats (Persian) at 12 months, and large breeds (Maine Coon, Ragdoll) may continue growing until 18 months or longer.

  • Small cats (Siamese, Burmese): 8–10 lbs adult, 10 months to full size
  • Medium cats (Persian, Domestic): 10–12 lbs, 12 months
  • Large cats (Maine Coon, Ragdoll): 12–18+ lbs, 18 months
  • Maine Coons can take up to 3–4 years to fully fill out in body mass
  • Bengal cats: 10–15 lbs, reach full size around 12–14 months
