Max Reach17.2 ft
Setback3.4 ft from wall
Angle75.5°

Safe Configuration

Must extend 3 ft above roof/landing

Example Calculations

11-Story Roof Access (Extension Ladder)

Inputs

Ladder TypeExtension Ladder
Task1-Story Roof (13 ft)
Your Height68 inches (5'8")

Result

Ladder Size18 ft extension

Target 13 ft wall height. At 75.5° angle, ladder length = 13 / sin(75.5°) + 3 ft deduction = 13 / 0.968 + 3 = 16.4 ft. Rounded up to 18 ft (nearest even). Setback from wall: 13 / tan(75.5°) = 3.4 ft.

2Interior Painting (Step Ladder, 9 ft ceiling)

Inputs

Ladder TypeStep Ladder
TaskCustom Height (9 ft)
Your Height68 inches (5'8")

Result

Ladder Size6 ft step ladder

Person reach = 5.67 ft + 1.5 ft overhead = 7.17 ft. Standing height needed = 9 - 7.17 = 1.83 ft. Add 2 ft deduction for top-step rule = 3.83 ft. Rounded to 4 ft minimum, but 6 ft step ladder recommended for comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

What size ladder do I need to reach a certain height?

For extension ladders, you need a ladder 3–4 feet longer than the height you want to reach, because the top 3 feet must extend above the support point and the base sits away from the wall. A 1-story roof (13 ft) needs a 16–20 ft extension ladder. A 2-story roof (22 ft) needs a 24–28 ft ladder.

  • 1-story gutter (10 ft): 16 ft extension ladder
  • 1-story roof (13 ft): 20 ft extension ladder
  • 2-story gutter (18 ft): 24 ft extension ladder
  • 2-story roof (22 ft): 28 ft extension ladder
  • Step ladders: subtract your reach height (~4 ft) from target, add 2 ft for top-step rule

Q

What is the 4-to-1 ladder rule?

The 4-to-1 rule means the base of an extension ladder should be 1 foot away from the wall for every 4 feet of ladder height. This creates a 75.5° angle, which provides the best balance of stability and strength. A 20-foot ladder should have its base 5 feet from the wall.

  • 12 ft ladder: base 3 ft from wall
  • 16 ft ladder: base 4 ft from wall
  • 20 ft ladder: base 5 ft from wall
  • 24 ft ladder: base 6 ft from wall
  • Too steep (base too close): ladder can tip backward
  • Too shallow (base too far): ladder can slide out at the bottom
Q

What is the highest step you can stand on?

On a step ladder, never stand on the top two steps (or top cap). On an extension ladder, your feet should be at least 3 rungs from the top. Standing too high on any ladder moves your center of gravity above the support point, making it unstable.

  • Step ladder: never stand on top 2 steps or the top cap
  • Extension ladder: feet at least 3 rungs from the top
  • Extension against roof: ladder must extend 3 ft above roof edge
  • Always maintain 3 points of contact (2 hands + 1 foot or 2 feet + 1 hand)
  • Never lean to the side — move the ladder instead
Q

Step ladder vs extension ladder: when to use each?

Step ladders are self-supporting and best for indoor work, painting, and tasks where you can't lean against a wall. Extension ladders lean against a structure and reach much higher. Use step ladders up to 10–12 feet of reach; extension ladders for anything above that.

  • Step ladder: self-supporting, 4–14 ft, indoor/outdoor, no wall needed
  • Extension ladder: leans against wall, 16–40 ft, outdoor heights
  • Multi-position: converts between step, extension, scaffold, and staircase configurations
  • Step ladders weigh less and set up faster for quick tasks
  • Extension ladders are a must for roof access, exterior painting, gutter work
