A queen bed needs a rug extending 2 feet past each side. The 9 x 12 standard size provides generous coverage so your feet hit rug when stepping out of bed.

Hallway runners should be 2–3 feet wide with about 1 foot of clearance at each end. A 3 x 10 runner fits a 12 x 4 hallway well.
For most living rooms, subtract 2 feet from each room dimension for the ideal rug size. A 15 x 12 foot living room works best with a 9 x 12 rug if all furniture legs are on the rug, or an 8 x 10 for the popular "front legs only" layout.
| Room Size | All Legs On | Front Legs Only | Floating |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10’ x 12’ | 8’x10’ | 6’x9’ | 5’x7’ |
| 12’ x 15’ | 9’x12’ | 8’x10’ | 6’x9’ |
| 15’ x 18’ | 10’x14’ | 9’x12’ | 8’x10’ |
A queen bed (60" x 80") needs an 8 x 10 or 9 x 12 rug. The rug should extend at least 2 feet beyond each side of the bed so your feet land on the rug when getting out of bed. The rug extends 2–3 feet past the foot of the bed.
The rug must extend at least 24 inches beyond the dining table on all sides. This allows chairs to remain on the rug even when pulled out. For a 42 x 72 inch table, you need at least a 7 x 10 rug. Round tables need a round or square rug with the same 24-inch extension.
Standard area rug sizes are 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 5x8, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14, and 12x15 feet. Runner rugs come in 2x6, 2x8, 2x10, and 3x10 feet. Buying a standard size saves money because custom sizes cost 2–3 times more.
Area rug prices vary by material and size. A quality 8 x 10 synthetic rug costs $80–$400, natural fiber (jute/sisal) runs $240–$800, and wool rugs start at $400 and can exceed $1,600. Hand-knotted Persian and Oriental rugs can cost $2,000–$10,000 or more.
| Material | 5’x8’ | 8’x10’ | 9’x12’ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Synthetic | $40–$200 | $80–$400 | $108–$540 |
| Natural Fiber | $120–$400 | $240–$800 | $324–$1,080 |
| Wool | $200–$800 | $400–$1,600 | $540–$2,160 |
