Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How many watts per person do I need for an event sound system?

Plan 5–12 watts per person depending on venue type and event style. Indoor events with low ceilings need about 5W per person, while outdoor open-air events need 12W. A dance party for 150 people indoors needs about 750W total system power.

  • Indoor (low ceiling): 5 watts per person
  • Indoor (high ceiling): 7 watts per person
  • Outdoor (tented): 8 watts per person
  • Outdoor (open air): 12 watts per person
  • Background music: multiply by 0.5; live band: multiply by 1.3

Q

How many speakers do I need for my event?

For most events, you need 2 main speakers (one per side of the stage/DJ booth) plus 1 subwoofer per 500 watts of system power. A 150-person indoor dance party needs 2 main speakers and 1–2 subwoofers. Add stage monitors for live bands (2 minimum) and delay stacks for venues over 5,000 sq ft.

  • Main speakers always come in pairs (left + right)
  • 1 subwoofer per 500W of total system power
  • Live bands need 2+ stage monitors
  • Venues over 5,000 sq ft may need delay speaker stacks
  • Each speaker typically handles 500W
Q

Do I need a subwoofer for my event?

Yes, for any event with music — especially dance parties and DJ events. Subwoofers handle bass frequencies (under 120 Hz) that main speakers cannot reproduce well. Plan 1 subwoofer per 500 watts of total system power. Without subs, music sounds thin and loses impact.

  • Background music only: optional (1 small sub is nice)
  • Dance party / DJ: 1 sub per 500W minimum
  • Live band: 1 sub per 500W, plus band may bring their own
  • Outdoor events need more sub power due to bass dissipation
Q

When do I need delay speakers for an event?

Add delay stacks when your venue exceeds 5,000 square feet. Sound loses energy over distance — past 80–100 feet from the main speakers, guests at the back will struggle to hear clearly. Add 2 delay speakers (one per side) for every additional 3,000 sq ft beyond 5,000.

  • Under 5,000 sq ft: main speakers are sufficient
  • 5,000–8,000 sq ft: add 2 delay speakers
  • 8,000–11,000 sq ft: add 4 delay speakers
  • Delay speakers are time-aligned to prevent echo
