Most countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months (183 days) beyond your planned travel dates. Even if your passport is not expired, you may be denied boarding or entry if it expires within 6 months of your return date. This rule applies to most of Europe, Asia, and Central/South America.
- Rule: passport must be valid 6+ months past your travel date
- Applies to 100+ countries including all Schengen zone nations
- Airlines check at boarding and will deny you if passport fails the rule
- Some exceptions: UK, Ireland, and Mexico accept shorter validity
- Canada requires validity through your planned departure date only
