1Residential Driveway (Hot Mix Asphalt)

Inputs

Length50 ft
Width12 ft
Thickness3 inches
Asphalt TypeHot Mix Asphalt (HMA)

Result

Asphalt Needed10.88 tons
Square Feet600
Cubic Feet150
Cubic Yards5.56
Truck Loads1
Material Cost$1,088
Installed Cost$3,188

Area = 50 × 12 = 600 sq ft. Volume = 600 × (3/12) = 150 cu ft = 5.56 cu yd. Weight = 150 × 145 lbs/cf = 21,750 lbs = 10.88 tons. Material = 10.88 × $100 = $1,088. Installation = 600 × $3.50 = $2,100. Total installed = $3,188.

Width20 ft
Thickness4 inches
Asphalt TypeRecycled Asphalt (RAP)

Result

Asphalt Needed18.67 tons
Square Feet800
Cubic Feet266.7
Cubic Yards9.88
Truck Loads2
Material Cost$1,400
Installed Cost$4,200

Area = 40 × 20 = 800 sq ft. Volume = 800 × (4/12) = 266.7 cu ft = 9.88 cu yd. Weight = 266.7 × 140 lbs/cf = 37,333 lbs = 18.67 tons. Material = 18.67 × $75 = $1,400. Installation = 800 × $3.50 = $2,800. Total installed = $4,200.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much does asphalt cost per square foot?

Asphalt typically costs $3-7 per square foot installed, including materials and labor. Materials alone run $80-150 per ton. A 2-car driveway (600 sq ft) usually costs $2,500-$5,000 installed.

  • Hot mix asphalt material: $80–$120 per ton, which covers about 55 sq ft at 3" depth per ton
  • Labor and equipment typically add $2.50–$3.50 per sq ft on top of material costs
  • Gravel base preparation adds $1.50–$3.00 per sq ft if existing base needs replacement
  • Get 3 quotes from licensed contractors; prices can vary 30–40% between bids in the same area
  • Fall paving (September–October) is often 10–15% cheaper as contractors finish their season
Q

How thick should a residential driveway be?

Residential driveways should have 2-3 inches of asphalt over a 4-8 inch compacted gravel base. Heavy-use driveways or those with RV/boat traffic should be 3-4 inches thick.

  • Standard passenger vehicles: 2" binder course + 1" top course (3" total) over 6" gravel base
  • Heavy vehicles (RV, boat trailer, work trucks): 3–4" asphalt over 8" compacted aggregate base
  • Commercial parking lots: 4–6" asphalt with proper sub-base engineering
  • Each additional inch of thickness adds roughly 1.8 tons per 1,000 sq ft of material cost

Standard driveway3"6–8"18.1
Heavy-use driveway4"8"24.2

Q

How many tons of asphalt do I need?

Calculate: Square feet × Depth (inches) × 145 ÷ 12 ÷ 2000 = tons. For example, a 600 sq ft driveway at 3" depth needs about 10.9 tons. Add 5-10% for waste and compaction.

  • Hot mix asphalt weighs 145 lbs per cubic foot; recycled asphalt (RAP) weighs about 140 lbs/cf
  • A standard dump truck carries 12–15 tons; plan delivery based on truck loads
  • Add 5–10% waste factor for edges, transitions, and compaction variance
  • Compaction reduces volume by about 25%, so 1 ton covers roughly 55 sq ft at 3" depth after rolling
Q

What is the difference between hot mix and cold patch?

Hot mix asphalt is heated and laid by professionals for new surfaces. It's stronger and more durable. Cold patch is pre-mixed and can be applied cold by DIYers for patching potholes and small repairs.

  • Hot mix is produced at 300–350°F and must be laid while hot; typical delivery window is 30–60 minutes
  • Cold patch costs $8–15 per 50-lb bag; a 2 sq ft pothole uses about 1 bag
  • Hot mix lasts 15–25 years; cold patch is a temporary repair lasting 1–3 years
  • Warm mix asphalt (produced at 200–275°F) is gaining popularity for lower emissions and longer working time
TypeCost/TonDurabilityDIY-Friendly
Hot Mix (HMA)$80–$12015–25 yearsNo (requires paver)
Warm Mix (WMA)$90–$13015–25 yearsNo
Cold Patch$150+ (bags)1–3 yearsYes
Recycled (RAP)$50–$8510–15 yearsNo
Q

How long does asphalt take to cure?

Asphalt is drivable within 24-48 hours but takes 6-12 months to fully cure. Avoid parking in the same spot, sharp turns, or heavy loads for the first 2-3 weeks. Seal coating should wait 6-12 months.

  • First 48 hours: keep all traffic off the surface; asphalt is still soft enough to dent
  • Weeks 1–3: avoid parking in the same spot, turning wheels while stationary, or placing kickstands on it
  • Month 1–6: asphalt surface remains softer in high heat (above 90°F); avoid heavy loads on hot days
  • Apply first seal coat at 6–12 months ($0.15–$0.25/sq ft), then every 2–3 years to extend lifespan by 5–10 years
