Fragrance Oil1.8 oz (53 ml)
Total Weight24.26 oz
Wick SizeCD-8 or ECO-6
Est. Burn Time22 hours per candle
Est. Material Cost$14.68

Wax per candle = 8 oz × 0.52 density × 0.90 fill = 3.744 oz. Total for 6 = 22.46 oz. Fragrance = 22.46 × 0.08 = 1.80 oz. Cost = (22.46 × $0.40) + (1.80 × $1.50) + (6 × $0.50) = $14.68.

Fragrance Oil2.33 oz (69 ml)
Total Weight25.66 oz
Wick SizeCD-4 or ECO-2
Est. Burn Time12 hours per candle
Est. Material Cost$15.83

Wax per candle = 4 oz × 0.54 density × 0.90 fill = 1.944 oz. Total for 12 = 23.33 oz. Fragrance = 23.33 × 0.10 = 2.33 oz. Cost = (23.33 × $0.40) + (2.33 × $1.50) + (12 × $0.50) = $15.83.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much wax do I need per candle?

Multiply your container volume (in oz) by 0.9 (for 90% fill) and then by the wax density (about 0.52 for soy). An 8 oz jar needs approximately 3.7 oz of wax. Always make 10% extra for testing.

  • 4 oz tin: ~1.9 oz soy wax (4 × 0.52 × 0.9)
  • 8 oz jar: ~3.7 oz soy wax (8 × 0.52 × 0.9)
  • 16 oz jar: ~7.5 oz soy wax (16 × 0.52 × 0.9)
  • Buy wax in bulk (10+ lb) for $7–$12/lb vs $15–$20/lb retail
  • Add 10% extra wax to your batch for test candles and top-off pours
Q

What is fragrance load?

Fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance oil relative to wax weight. Most waxes can hold 6-12%. Soy wax typically maxes at 10%, paraffin at 12%. Too much fragrance causes sweating and poor burn.

  • 6–8% is the safe range for beginners – produces a pleasant, consistent scent
  • 10–12% is for experienced makers who have tested their specific wax/fragrance combo
  • Always add fragrance at the recommended temperature for your wax type
  • Stir fragrance into wax for a full 2 minutes to ensure even binding
Q

How do I choose the right wick size?

Wick size depends on container diameter. 2" diameter = CD-6, 2.5" = CD-8, 3" = CD-10. Always test burn - the melt pool should reach container edges in 2-4 hours without smoking.

  • Melt pool should reach container edges within 2–4 hours of burning
  • Too small wick = tunneling (wax left on sides); too large = smoking and soot
  • Trim wick to 1/4" before every burn for clean, even flame
  • Soy wax typically needs 1 wick size larger than paraffin for the same container

Q

What temperature should I pour wax?

Soy wax: 135-145°F. Paraffin: 170-180°F. Beeswax: 145-155°F. Coconut: 120-130°F. Pouring too hot causes sinkholes; too cold causes adhesion issues.

  • Add fragrance oil 10–15°F above your pour temperature for proper binding
  • Pour too hot: sinkholes, shrinkage, and rough tops from fast cooling
  • Pour too cold: poor jar adhesion (wet spots) and uneven surface
  • Use an infrared thermometer ($10–15) for accurate, instant readings
  • Pre-heat glass jars to ~100°F to reduce wet spots and improve adhesion

Coconut140–150°F165°F120–130°F

Q

How long should candles cure?

Soy candles need 1-2 weeks to cure for best scent throw. Paraffin cures faster (3-5 days). During curing, fragrance molecules bind with wax for stronger cold and hot throw.

  • Soy wax: 1–2 weeks minimum; hot throw improves significantly after 10–14 days
  • Paraffin: 3–5 days is usually sufficient for full scent development
  • Coconut/coconut blends: 1–2 weeks, similar to soy
  • Cure in a cool, dark place (65–75°F) away from sunlight to prevent discoloration
  • Test burn at 3 days and again at 14 days – you will notice a clear scent improvement
