Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How do I choose the right embroidery stabilizer?

The fabric type determines the stabilizer type. Woven fabrics like cotton use tear-away stabilizer. Stretchy knits need cut-away stabilizer. Sheer or napped fabrics need a water-soluble topping plus cut-away backing.

  • Cotton, denim: tear-away stabilizer (easy removal)
  • Knits, T-shirts: cut-away stabilizer (prevents stretching)
  • Fleece, terry: cut-away + water-soluble topping
  • Silk, satin: cut-away + topping (prevents snagging)
  • Felt: no stabilizer or light tear-away
Q

How many layers of stabilizer do I need?

One layer handles most light-to-medium designs. Heavy fill designs and fine fabrics benefit from two layers. The design density is as important as the fabric type in determining layer count.

  • Light designs (outlines, text): 1 layer
  • Medium fill designs: 1 layer on stable fabrics
  • Heavy fill designs: 2 layers for full support
  • 3D puff designs: 2 layers plus foam
  • Sheer fabrics: always at least 2 (backing + topping)
Q

What is the difference between tear-away and cut-away?

Tear-away stabilizer tears off after stitching and leaves no residue, best for stable woven fabrics. Cut-away stabilizer stays in the garment permanently and is essential for knits to prevent the design from stretching and distorting over time.

  • Tear-away: tears off, no residue, for woven fabrics
  • Cut-away: stays permanently, for knits and stretchy fabrics
  • Water-soluble: dissolves in water, for toppings and freestanding lace
  • Heat-away: vanishes with heat, for delicate fabrics that cannot get wet
Q

Do I need a water-soluble topping?

A topping is needed when the fabric surface would swallow stitches. Fleece, terry cloth, and velvet all benefit from a water-soluble topping that keeps stitches sitting on top of the nap.

  • Fleece: topping prevents stitches from sinking into fibers
  • Terry cloth: topping sits over the loops
  • Corduroy, velvet: topping preserves stitch definition
  • Not needed for smooth fabrics like cotton or silk
