Screen Printing Frame Calculator — Size & Mesh Estimator

Find the right frame size and mesh count for any screen printing project based on your print area

Frame Size

18" × 20"

Mesh

156

Cost

$40

Frames

1

Frame Estimate

18" \u00D7 20"
minimum frame size
Mesh Area
2.50 ft²
Total Cost
$40

Tips

1. Allow at least 3" border around your print area for proper ink flooding
2. 156 mesh is the most versatile; start here for general t-shirt printing
3. Aluminum frames hold tension longer and resist warping in humid conditions
4. Higher mesh counts deposit less ink, producing finer detail but lighter prints
5. Re-tension mesh annually on aluminum frames to maintain print quality

Result

Frame Size12" × 12"
Total Cost (4 frames)$52.00

6" + 6" = 12" per side. 4 frames at $13/each for fine-detail 200 mesh on aluminum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

What size screen frame do I need for t-shirt printing?

Add at least 6 inches to your design dimensions (3" border on each side) to determine the minimum frame size. A standard adult t-shirt front print area of 12" × 14" needs a minimum 18" × 20" frame.

  • Small designs (6" × 6"): 12" × 12" frame minimum
  • Standard t-shirt (12" × 14"): 18" × 20" frame
  • Full-chest print (14" × 17"): 20" × 23" frame
  • All-over print: 23" × 31" or larger frame
Q

What mesh count should I use for screen printing?

156 mesh is the most versatile choice for general t-shirt printing. Lower mesh counts (110) deposit more ink for bold graphics, while higher counts (230+) produce finer detail but thinner ink layers.

  • 110 mesh: bold graphics, heavy ink deposit, dark garments
  • 156 mesh: general purpose, text + graphics, most popular
  • 200 mesh: fine detail, halftones, simulated process
  • 230–305 mesh: ultra-fine detail, water-based and discharge ink

110HeavyLowBold spots, underbase
156MediumMediumGeneral printing
200LightHighHalftones, CMYK
305Very lightUltra-highFine art, discharge
Q

Should I use wood or aluminum frames?

Aluminum frames are the professional standard because they hold mesh tension longer, resist warping, and last for thousands of prints. Wood frames are cheaper but lose tension and warp in humid conditions.

  • Aluminum: $30–80 per frame, lasts years, holds 20–30 N/cm tension
  • Wood: $10–25 per frame, warps over time, 8–15 N/cm tension
  • Aluminum is reclaimed and re-stretched; wood frames are disposable
  • For production: aluminum always; for hobby: wood is fine to start
Q

How much does a screen printing screen cost?

A ready-to-use aluminum screen with 156 mesh costs $25–50 for a standard 20" × 24" frame. Wood frames cost $10–20. Buying mesh and stretching yourself saves 40–60% but requires a stretching system.

  • Pre-stretched aluminum (20"×24"): $25–$50
  • Pre-stretched wood (20"×24"): $10–$20
  • DIY mesh + aluminum frame: $15–$30
  • Bulk orders (10+ screens): 15–25% discount
