A large back print on premium film costs $30.86 per transfer. Premium film provides better color vibrancy and wash durability but significantly increases cost. Ideal for high-end custom orders.
A single DTF transfer costs between $0.50 and $15 depending on print size, ink coverage, and film quality. A left-chest logo (4×4 in) on economy film runs about $1.33, while a full-front design (10×12 in) on standard film costs around $14.80. Ink is a small fraction of the cost; film is the dominant expense.
| Print Size | Film Cost | Ink Cost | Powder Cost | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4×4 in (16 sq in) | $1.28 | $0.004 | $0.05 | $1.33 |
| 10×12 in (120 sq in) | $14.40 | $0.06 | $0.36 | $14.82 |
| 12×14 in (168 sq in) | $30.24 | $0.12 | $0.50 | $30.87 |
DTF is more cost-effective for small runs under 50 pieces because there are no screen setup fees ($25–$50 per color). Screen printing wins on large runs (200+) where the per-unit cost drops below $1. DTF also prints unlimited colors with no extra cost, while each screen printing color adds $15–25 per screen.
| Method | Setup Cost | 10 Units | 100 Units | 500 Units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DTF (full-front) | $0 | ~$148 | ~$1,482 | ~$7,409 |
| Screen Print (3-color) | $75–$150 | ~$100 | ~$350 | ~$1,000 |
| Sublimation | $0 | ~$15–$20 | ~$150–$200 | ~$750–$1,000 |
The standard DTF curing settings are 325°F (165°C) for 15–20 seconds at medium-firm pressure. Pre-press the garment for 3–5 seconds to remove moisture. Peel the film warm (not hot) for best color vibrancy. Under-pressing causes poor adhesion; over-pressing yellows white ink.
Properly applied DTF transfers last 50–80+ washes without significant cracking or fading. Durability depends on curing temperature, powder adhesion, and wash care. Washing inside-out on cold with no bleach extends transfer life. DTF durability is comparable to screen printing and superior to iron-on vinyl.
| Method | Wash Durability | Feel on Fabric | Color Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| DTF Transfer | 50–80+ washes | Soft, slight texture | Unlimited CMYK |
| Screen Print | 80–100+ washes | Very soft (water-based) | 1–8 spot colors |
| Sublimation | 100+ washes | No texture (dye bond) | Full color (polyester only) |
| Heat Transfer Vinyl | 25–50 washes | Thick, plasticky | Single color per layer |
A basic DTF setup costs $1,500–$5,000 and includes a converted inkjet printer (Epson L1800 or similar), CMYK+white DTF ink, PET film, hot-melt adhesive powder, a powder shaking/curing unit, and a heat press. Entry-level all-in-one DTF printers start around $2,000–$3,000.
| Equipment | Budget | Mid-Range | Professional |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printer | $800–$1,200 | $2,000–$3,000 | $5,000–$15,000 |
| Curing Unit | $50 (DIY) | $300–$600 | $1,000–$1,500 |
| Heat Press | $200–$300 | $400–$600 | $800–$1,500 |
| Total Setup | $1,500–$2,000 | $3,000–$5,000 | $8,000–$18,000 |
