Example Calculations

1Rectangular Table Coating (12" × 8" × 1/4")

Inputs

ShapeRectangular
Length12 inches
Width8 inches
Depth0.25 inches
Mix Ratio1:1
Waste Factor10%

Result

Total Resin Needed14.63 fl oz
Resin Part7.32 fl oz
Hardener Part7.32 fl oz
Base Volume24 cu in (13.30 fl oz)
Volume in ML393 ml

Volume = 12 × 8 × 0.25 = 24 cu in. Converted = 24 × 0.554 = 13.30 fl oz. With 10% waste = 13.30 × 1.10 = 14.63 fl oz. At 1:1 ratio, resin and hardener each = 7.32 fl oz.

2Deep Pour River Table (24" × 6" × 2")

Inputs

ShapeRectangular
Length24 inches
Width6 inches
Depth2 inches
Mix Ratio2:1
Waste Factor15%

Result

Total Resin Needed183.40 fl oz
Resin Part122.33 fl oz
Hardener Part61.07 fl oz
Base Volume288 cu in (159.55 fl oz)
Volume in ML4,720 ml

Volume = 24 × 6 × 2 = 288 cu in. Converted = 288 × 0.554 = 159.55 fl oz. With 15% waste = 159.55 × 1.15 = 183.48 fl oz. At 2:1 ratio, resin = 183.48 × 0.667 = 122.38, hardener = 183.48 × 0.333 = 61.10. (Minor rounding differences apply.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How do I calculate how much resin I need?

Multiply length × width × depth to get volume in cubic inches. Convert to fluid ounces by multiplying by 0.554. Add 10-15% for waste and mixing.

  • Formula: L × W × D (all in inches) × 0.554 = fluid ounces
  • 1 gallon of mixed resin covers ≈1,600 in² at 1/16" thick
  • 12" × 12" × 1/4" = 36 cu in = 19.9 fl oz of mixed resin
  • Circular molds: π × radius² × depth × 0.554
  • Always round up to the next full kit size
Q

What does the mix ratio mean?

The mix ratio (like 1:1 or 2:1) indicates the proportion of resin to hardener. A 1:1 ratio means equal parts, while 2:1 means 2 parts resin to 1 part hardener.

  • 1:1 ratio: equal parts by volume – most common for art resin
  • 2:1 ratio: 2 parts resin to 1 part hardener – common for table-top epoxy
  • 3:1 ratio: used by some deep-pour formulations
  • Always measure by volume (not weight) unless manufacturer specifies otherwise
  • Off-ratio mixing causes incomplete cure – surface stays tacky permanently

2:166.7%33.3%Table-top epoxy
3:175%25%Deep pour, casting

Q

Why add a waste factor?

Resin sticks to mixing containers and tools. A 10-15% waste factor ensures you have enough to complete your project without running short.

  • 5–10% lost to mixing cups, stir sticks, and squeegees
  • Additional 2–5% lost to drips and overflow edges
  • Running short mid-pour = visible seam lines that can't be hidden
  • Silicone mixing cups lose the least resin (≈3% vs. 8% for plastic)
  • Leftover resin: use for coasters, small molds, or seal cuts on other projects
Q

How thick can I pour epoxy resin?

Standard table-top epoxy can be poured 1/8" to 1/4" thick per layer. Deep pour resins allow 2-4" per pour. Check your specific product guidelines.

  • Table-top / coating epoxy: max 1/8"–1/4" per layer, cures in 12–24 hrs
  • Deep-pour epoxy: 1"–2" per layer typical, some allow up to 4"
  • Exceeding max depth causes exothermic reaction – can crack, yellow, or warp
  • Multiple thin layers bond well if poured within the recoat window (4–12 hrs)
  • Deep pours over 2" may need 48–72 hrs cure time per layer
