Mesh Count Guide

MeshDepositBest For
1101.4xHeavy deposit, bold graphics
1561.15xGeneral purpose, good detail
2001xStandard detail, moderate deposit
2300.85xFine detail, thin deposit
3050.65xVery fine detail, halftones

Screen Printing Tips

1. Higher mesh count = thinner ink deposit = finer detail but less opacity
2. Plastisol needs heat curing at 320°F; water-based air-dries but needs heat set
3. Always do a test print before a full run to verify ink coverage
4. Use white underbase on dark garments for vibrant colors
5. Clean screens immediately after use to prevent ink clogging mesh

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much ink do I use per screen print?

A 10" × 12" design with 156 mesh and plastisol ink uses about 2.69 oz of ink per print per color. Lower mesh (110) deposits more ink; higher mesh (305) deposits less for finer detail.

  • 110 mesh: ~3.27 oz/print — heavy deposit, bold graphics
  • 156 mesh: ~2.69 oz/print — general purpose
  • 230 mesh: ~1.99 oz/print — fine detail
  • 305 mesh: ~1.52 oz/print — halftones, very fine
Q

What mesh count should I use for screen printing?

Use 110–156 mesh for bold graphics and spot colors. Use 200–230 mesh for moderate detail and process prints. Use 305 mesh for halftones and photographic images.

  • 110 mesh: bold text, simple graphics, heavy ink
  • 156 mesh: general purpose, good detail balance
  • 230 mesh: fine detail, moderate deposit
  • 305 mesh: halftones, CMYK process printing

Q

How much does screen printing ink cost per print?

Plastisol ink costs about $0.65/oz, making a single-color 10" × 12" print about $1.75 in ink. Water-based is slightly cheaper at $0.55/oz but needs heat setting. Specialty inks (puff, metallic) cost $1.20–$1.50/oz.

  • Plastisol: $0.65/oz — standard, easy to use
  • Water-based: $0.55/oz — soft hand, eco-friendly
  • Puff: $1.20/oz — raised 3D effect
  • Metallic: $1.50/oz — shimmer finish
Q

What is the difference between plastisol and water-based ink?

Plastisol sits on top of the fabric creating an opaque, durable print that must be heat-cured at 320°F. Water-based ink penetrates the fibers for a softer hand feel and needs heat setting, but is less opaque on dark garments.

  • Plastisol: opaque, sits on fabric, thick hand, 320°F cure
  • Water-based: penetrates fibers, soft hand, air dries + heat set
  • Discharge: bleaches fabric dye and replaces with new color
  • Water-based works best on light-colored garments
