Mold Making Tips

1. Seal porous originals (clay, plaster, wood) with spray sealer before molding
2. Use mold release spray on non-porous originals to prevent sticking
3. Mix Parts A and B by weight, not volume, for accurate ratios
4. De-gas in a vacuum chamber if available to remove trapped air bubbles
5. Tin-cure lasts 20–50 casts; platinum-cure can last 100+ casts

Example Calculations

1Small Box Mold (4" × 3" × 2", tin-cure)

Inputs

ShapeBox
Dimensions4" × 3" × 2"
Wall Thickness0.5"
SiliconeTin-Cure

Result

Silicone Needed0.90 lb
Silicone Volume22.9 in³
Est. Cost$19.80

Mold box = 5" × 4" × 2.5" = 50 in³. Object = 24 in³. Silicone = (50 - 24) × 1.10 waste = 28.6 in³ = 0.90 lb at ~25.5 in³/lb.

2Cylinder Mold (3" dia × 5" tall, platinum-cure)

Inputs

ShapeCylinder
Diameter3"
Height5"
SiliconePlatinum-Cure

Result

Silicone Needed1.32 lb
Silicone Volume33.6 in³
Est. Cost$42.24

Object = π × 1.5² × 5 = 35.3 in³. Mold box = π × 2² × 5.5 = 69.1 in³. Silicone = (69.1 - 35.3) × 1.10 = 37.2 in³.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much silicone rubber do I need for a mold?

The amount depends on your object size and mold wall thickness. A 4" × 3" × 2" box mold with 0.5" walls needs about 0.90 lb of silicone (~$20 for tin-cure). Larger objects or thicker walls increase the volume proportionally.

  • 4" × 3" × 2" box with 0.5" walls: ~0.90 lb silicone, ~$20
  • 6" sphere with 0.5" walls: ~2.5 lb silicone, ~$55
  • Tin-cure: ~$22/lb, 20–50 casts per mold
  • Platinum-cure: ~$32/lb, 100+ casts per mold
Silicone TypeCost/lbMold LifeBest For
Tin-Cure$2220–50 castsPrototyping, short runs
Platinum-Cure$32100+ castsProduction, food molds
Food-Safe$38100+ castsChocolate, candy, ice
Q

How thick should silicone mold walls be?

Standard wall thickness is 0.5" (13mm) for most molds. Thin walls (0.25") work for small, simple shapes. Thick walls (0.75–1") are needed for large or heavy castings to prevent the mold from flexing during demolding.

  • 0.25" walls: small objects under 2", simple shapes
  • 0.5" walls: standard for most craft and casting molds
  • 0.75" walls: large objects, complex undercuts
  • 1"+ walls: heavy castings (concrete, plaster), block molds
Q

What is the difference between tin-cure and platinum-cure silicone?

Tin-cure (condensation cure) is cheaper at ~$22/lb but shrinks slightly over time and has a shorter mold life (20–50 casts). Platinum-cure (addition cure) costs ~$32/lb but offers negligible shrinkage, longer mold life (100+ casts), and food-safe options.

  • Tin-cure: affordable, slight shrinkage, inhibited by sulfur-based clays
  • Platinum-cure: precise, zero shrinkage, inhibited by tin, latex, sulfur
  • Food-safe platinum-cure is FDA-compliant for candy and chocolate molds
  • Both types are mixed in equal parts (1:1) by weight for most brands
Q

How do I reduce air bubbles in silicone molds?

Mix silicone slowly to minimize air entrapment, then vacuum degas for 3–5 minutes at 29" Hg. Pour in a thin stream from a height to break bubbles. For small molds without a vacuum chamber, tap the mold container against the table to release trapped air.

  • Vacuum degassing removes 95% of bubbles in 3–5 minutes
  • Pour silicone in a thin stream from 12–18" height
  • Tilt the mold box during pouring to avoid trapping air pockets
  • Pressure pot at 60 psi compresses remaining bubbles to invisible size
