Example Calculations

1400 ft Perimeter Poly Mesh Fence

Inputs

Perimeter400 ft
Mesh TypePoly Mesh
Post Spacing10 ft
Gates1
Gate Width4 ft

Result

Fence Posts41
Mesh Rolls (100ft)4
Tension Wire1,188 ft

Fence = 400 - 4 = 396 ft. Posts = ceil(396/10)+1 = 41. Mesh = ceil(396/100) = 4 rolls. Wire = 396×3 = 1,188 ft.

2800 ft Perimeter Welded Wire Fence

Inputs

Perimeter800 ft
Mesh TypeWelded Wire
Post Spacing8 ft
Gates2
Gate Width4 ft

Result

Fence Posts100
Mesh Rolls (100ft)8
Tension Wire2,376 ft

Fence = 800-8 = 792 ft. Posts = ceil(792/8)+1 = 100. Mesh = ceil(792/100) = 8 rolls. Wire = 792×3 = 2,376 ft.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How tall does a deer fence need to be?

Deer fences must be at least 8 feet tall to prevent white-tailed deer from jumping over. Some sources suggest 7.5 ft is sufficient, but 8 ft provides a safety margin. Shorter fences (5–6 ft) may work if angled outward at 45 degrees.

  • 8 ft: standard deer fence height (recommended)
  • 7.5 ft: minimum effective height
  • 6 ft at 45° angle: alternative design that works for some
  • 10 ft: needed for mule deer in western states
  • Double fence (two 4 ft fences 4 ft apart) also works
Q

Is poly mesh or welded wire better for deer?

Polypropylene mesh is cheaper, lighter, and nearly invisible from a distance. Welded wire is stronger and lasts longer but costs 2–3x more. Poly mesh is sufficient for deer — they rarely push through fencing, they jump over it.

  • Poly mesh: $0.30–$0.60/ft, 15–20 year lifespan
  • Welded wire: $1–$2/ft, 25+ year lifespan
  • Poly mesh is nearly invisible (aesthetic advantage)
  • Welded wire also stops smaller animals (rabbits, groundhogs)
  • Metal mesh is better if bears or elk are a concern
TypeCost/ftLifespanVisibility
Poly Mesh$0.30–$0.6015–20 yrsNearly invisible
Welded Wire$1–$225+ yrsVisible
Q

How deep should deer fence posts be?

Deer fence posts should be buried 2 feet deep for stability. With an 8 ft fence, use 10 ft posts (8 ft above ground + 2 ft buried). Corner and gate posts should be set in concrete for maximum strength.

  • Post length: 10 ft (8 above + 2 buried)
  • Line posts: 10 ft spacing for poly mesh, 8 ft for wire
  • Corner posts: set in concrete, use 4×4 or larger
  • Gate posts: set in concrete, 6×6 for heavy gates
  • Add tension wire at top, middle, and bottom
Q

How much does deer fencing cost per foot?

A complete deer fence costs $3–$8 per linear foot for DIY poly mesh installation, or $8–$15 per foot professionally installed. A 400 ft perimeter fence costs $1,200–$3,200 DIY.

  • DIY poly mesh: $3–$5 per linear foot
  • DIY welded wire: $5–$8 per linear foot
  • Professional install: $8–$15 per linear foot
  • 400 ft perimeter: $1,200–$3,200 DIY
  • Gates add $100–$300 each installed
