Fence = 500-12 = 488 ft. Line = ceil(488/8) = 61. Total = 61+4 = 65. Wire = 488×3 = 1,464 ft = 2 rolls (1,320 ft/roll).
At standard 8 ft spacing, you need about 13–14 posts per 100 ft of fence. High-tensile wire can use 12–20 ft spacing between line posts, while board fencing typically uses 8 ft spacing. Corner and brace posts are additional.
| Fence Type | Post Spacing | Posts/100ft | Wire/Rolls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Woven Wire | 8 ft | 13–14 | 1 roll (330ft) |
| High Tensile | 12–20 ft | 6–9 | 5 strands |
| Board | 8 ft | 13–14 | 4 boards/span |
| Electric | 12–15 ft | 7–9 | 3 strands |
Cattle do well with high-tensile 5-strand or barbed wire. Goats need woven wire (no-climb) because they squeeze through strand fencing. Horses require board or smooth high-tensile — never barbed wire due to injury risk.
Woven wire fencing costs $2–$4 per linear foot installed. High-tensile is $1.50–$3 per foot. Board fencing is the most expensive at $5–$12 per foot. Electric is cheapest at $0.50–$1.50 per foot but needs a charger.
Plan at least 1 gate per paddock for equipment access (12–16 ft wide) plus walk-through gates (3–4 ft) for daily use. For rotational grazing, each subdivided paddock needs its own gate.
