Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much pen space does each goat need?

Standard goats need about 200 sq ft of pen space each, miniatures 130 sq ft, and dairy or meat breeds 250 sq ft. Shelter space requirements are 20–25 sq ft per goat for sleeping and weather protection.

  • Standard goats: 200 sq ft pen + 20 sq ft shelter per head
  • Miniature goats: 130 sq ft pen + 15 sq ft shelter
  • Dairy goats: 250 sq ft pen + 25 sq ft shelter (milking access)
  • Boer/meat goats: 250 sq ft pen + 25 sq ft shelter
  • More space reduces parasites, hoof problems, and fighting

Q

How tall should goat fencing be?

Goat fencing should be at least 4 feet for miniatures and 5 feet for standard breeds. Climbing breeds like Nigerian Dwarfs may need 5–6 foot fencing. Woven wire or cattle panels are preferred over chain link.

  • Miniatures: 4 ft minimum fence height
  • Standard/dairy: 5 ft minimum
  • Climbers (Nigerian Dwarf): 5–6 ft or electric top wire
  • Woven wire (no-climb) is the safest option
  • Post spacing: 8 ft with T-posts, 10 ft with wood posts
Q

What shelter does a goat need?

Goats need a three-sided shelter at minimum to escape rain, wind, and sun. Allow 15–25 sq ft per goat depending on breed size. The shelter floor should be raised or have drainage to stay dry.

  • Three-sided shelter is the minimum for weather protection
  • 15 sq ft per miniature, 20–25 per standard or dairy goat
  • Deep bedding (straw) for insulation in cold climates
  • Good ventilation to prevent respiratory issues
  • South-facing opening in northern climates for passive solar
Q

Can I keep goats on a small lot?

You need at least 500 sq ft total for 2 miniature goats, or 1,000 sq ft for 2 standard goats. Many suburbs allow goats with permits. Always check local zoning before building a pen.

  • 2 miniature goats: minimum 500 sq ft total
  • 2 standard goats: minimum 1,000 sq ft total
  • Check local zoning and HOA rules first
  • Goats are social — always keep at least 2
  • Rotational grazing with 2+ paddocks reduces parasite load
