Container Gardening Tips

Drainage: Every pot needs drainage holes. Drill 4–6 holes (3/8" to 1/2") in the bottom of solid containers.
Soil choice: Use potting mix, not garden soil. Garden soil compacts in containers and blocks drainage.
Bigger is better: When in doubt, go one size up. Larger pots hold more moisture and buffer temperature swings.
Color matters: Dark pots absorb heat and can cook roots in summer. Use light-colored containers in hot climates.

Three herb pots need about 5 gallons total. Three 8-quart bags (6 gal total) provides enough soil with a small reserve for settling.

Result

Total Soil Needed42 gallons
Tomato Pots2 pots at 12–15 gal each
Pepper Pots3 pots at 4 gal each
Soil Bags (2 cu ft)3 bags

Two indeterminate tomatoes need 12–15 gal pots each (24–30 gal), plus three peppers at 4 gal each (12 gal). Three 2-cubic-foot bags (45 gal) covers it with extra for settling.

A 12-inch pot holds about 5 gallons. Four pots need 20 gallons total. Three 1-cubic-foot bags (22.5 gal) fills them all with a bit left over.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

What size pot do I need for tomatoes?

Determinate (bush) tomatoes need a 5–10 gallon pot, while indeterminate (vining) tomatoes need 10–15 gallons. A standard 5-gallon bucket works for compact varieties, but larger pots produce better yields and need less frequent watering.

  • Determinate tomatoes: 5–10 gal pot (12–16" diameter)
  • Indeterminate tomatoes: 10–15 gal pot (16–18" diameter)
  • Cherry tomatoes: 5 gal minimum, 7–10 gal ideal
  • Each additional gallon adds roughly 1 day between waterings in summer
  • Black plastic pots absorb heat — use light-colored containers in hot climates

Vining (indeterminate)10 gal15 gal18"
Q

How much potting soil do I need for my containers?

Soil volume depends on pot size: a 5-gallon pot needs 5 gallons of soil (about 0.67 cubic feet), and a standard 2 cubic foot bag fills about 15 gallons. Buy 10–15% extra because soil settles after the first watering.

  • 8 qt bag = 2 gallons of soil (fills two 1-gallon pots)
  • 1 cu ft bag = 7.5 gallons of soil (fills one 5-gal + one 2-gal pot)
  • 2 cu ft bag = 15 gallons of soil (fills three 5-gallon pots)
  • Soil compresses 10–15% after first watering — buy extra to top off
  • Pre-mixed potting soil costs $5–12 per cubic foot; bulk saves 30–50%

Q

Can I grow vegetables in a 5-gallon bucket?

Yes, many vegetables thrive in 5-gallon buckets including peppers, eggplant, bush beans, and determinate tomatoes. Drill 4–6 drainage holes in the bottom. Lettuce, herbs, and strawberries grow well in even smaller containers at 1–3 gallons.

  • Peppers: ideal in 5-gallon buckets, one plant per bucket
  • Bush tomatoes: work in 5-gallon but 7–10 gal is better for yield
  • Eggplant: 5-gallon is the minimum, prefers 7+ gallons
  • Beans: 3–5 gallon works for bush varieties, 4–6 plants per pot
  • Drill 4–6 drainage holes (3/8" to 1/2") in the bottom of each bucket
Q

How often should I water container plants?

Watering frequency depends on pot size, plant type, and weather. Small pots under 3 gallons typically need daily watering in summer. Large pots of 10+ gallons may only need watering every 2–3 days. Self-watering containers extend intervals to 4–7 days.

  • Small pots (1–3 gal): water daily in summer, every 2 days in spring/fall
  • Medium pots (5–7 gal): water every 1–2 days in summer
  • Large pots (10–15 gal): water every 2–3 days in summer
  • Self-watering containers: refill reservoir every 4–7 days
  • Stick your finger 1" into soil — water when it feels dry at that depth

Q

What is the cheapest way to fill large containers with soil?

The cheapest method is bulk potting mix delivered by the cubic yard, which costs $30–60 per cubic yard (about $4–8 per 7.5 gallons). Bagged soil costs $8–15 for 2 cubic feet. For very large pots, fill the bottom third with filler like pine bark or packing peanuts to reduce soil volume.

  • Bulk potting mix: $30–60 per cubic yard (7.5 gal = ~$4–8)
  • Bagged 2 cu ft: $8–15 per bag (7.5 gal = ~$4–7.50)
  • Bottom-fill trick: pine bark or upside-down nursery pots in the bottom third
  • Reuse last year’s soil — amend with 25–30% fresh compost each season
  • DIY mix (1/3 peat, 1/3 compost, 1/3 perlite) costs ~$3 per 7.5 gallons
Q

What vegetables grow best in containers?

The best container vegetables are peppers, lettuce, herbs, bush beans, cherry tomatoes, and strawberries. These produce well in 1–10 gallon pots. Avoid plants with large root systems like corn and full-size watermelons unless you have 15+ gallon containers.

  • Lettuce & greens: 1 gal pots, harvest in 30–45 days, great for beginners
  • Herbs (basil, cilantro, parsley): 1–2 gal pots, continuous harvest
  • Peppers: 3–5 gal pots, 1 plant per pot, 60–90 days to harvest
  • Cherry tomatoes: 5–10 gal pots, stake or cage for support
  • Strawberries: 1–3 gal per plant, or 3–5 plants in a strawberry tower
