Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much soil do I need for a raised bed?

Calculate length × width × depth (in feet) to get cubic feet. A 4×8 foot bed that's 12 inches deep needs 32 cubic feet, or about 1.2 cubic yards of soil.

  • 4×8 ft bed at 12" deep: 8 × 4 × 1 = 32 cu ft (1.19 cu yd)
  • 4×4 ft bed at 10" deep: 4 × 4 × 0.83 = 13.3 cu ft (0.49 cu yd)
  • Bulk soil costs $25–$50 per cubic yard delivered; bagged costs $4–8 per 2 cu ft bag
  • A 32 cu ft bed needs 16 bags at 2 cu ft each — bulk delivery saves 40–60%
  • Soil settles 10–15% in the first season — overfill by 2" or plan to top off annually
Q

What is the best soil mix for raised beds?

A good basic mix is 60% topsoil, 30% compost, and 10% amendments (perlite/vermiculite). For square foot gardening, use equal parts compost, peat moss, and vermiculite.

  • Basic mix (60/30/10): most affordable at ~$30–$50 per cubic yard, good for most veggies
  • Premium mix (40/40/20): higher compost content improves drainage and nutrients
  • Mel's Mix (1/3 each): best for square foot gardening, excellent drainage but costs 2× more
  • Add 1–2 cups of granular fertilizer (10-10-10) per 4×8 ft bed at setup
  • Avoid using 100% compost — it compacts over time and holds too much moisture
Mix TypeRatioCost/cu ydBest For
Basic60/30/10$30–$50Budget gardens, most vegetables
Premium40/40/20$50–$80Heavy feeders (tomatoes, squash)
Mel's Mix1/3 each$80–$120Square foot gardening, herbs
Q

How deep should a raised bed be?

Most vegetables need 8-12 inches of soil. Root vegetables like carrots need 12+ inches. For most gardens, 10-12 inches provides good growing depth.

  • 6–8": sufficient for lettuce, herbs, radishes, and shallow-rooted greens
  • 10–12": ideal for most vegetables including peppers, beans, and cucumbers
  • 12–18": required for root crops (carrots, parsnips) and large plants (tomatoes)
  • Beds deeper than 18" waste soil — fill the bottom 6" with logs or straw (hügelkultur)
  • If placed on concrete or poor native soil, use at least 12" depth for proper root growth
Q

Should I put anything in the bottom of a raised bed?

You can line the bottom with cardboard to suppress weeds, or hardware cloth to prevent burrowing pests. Avoid plastic as it prevents drainage.

  • Cardboard: suppresses weeds for 1–2 seasons, decomposes naturally, free
  • Hardware cloth (1/2" mesh): prevents gophers/moles, costs $1–$2 per sq ft
  • Landscape fabric: semi-permanent weed barrier but can restrict root penetration
  • Never use plastic sheeting — it traps water and causes root rot
  • For deep beds (18"+), fill the bottom 4–6" with branches or straw to save on soil costs
