Mulching Tips

Keep away from trunks: Leave a 2–3" gap around tree trunks and plant stems to prevent rot.
Best timing: Apply in late spring after soil warms, or in fall before frost.
Refresh annually: Organic mulch decomposes. Top up each year to maintain depth.
Weed barrier: Remove existing weeds before mulching. Landscape fabric is optional under mulch.

Example Calculations

1Flower Bed with Shredded Bark

Inputs

Area20 ft × 10 ft (200 sq ft)
Depth3 inches
Mulch TypeShredded Bark

Result

Mulch Needed1.85 cubic yards
Cubic Feet50.0
Bags (2 cu ft)25
Est. Cost$56–$102
Weight~925 lbs

Area = 20 × 10 = 200 sq ft. Volume = 200 × (3/12) = 50 cu ft = 50/27 = 1.85 cu yd. Bags = ceil(50/2) = 25. Cost = 1.85 × $30–$55 = $56–$102.

2Vegetable Garden with Straw

Inputs

Area150 sq ft
Depth4 inches
Mulch TypeStraw

Result

Mulch Needed1.85 cubic yards
Cubic Feet50.0
Bags (2 cu ft)25
Est. Cost$28–$56
Weight~278 lbs

Area = 150 sq ft. Volume = 150 × (4/12) = 50 cu ft = 1.85 cu yd. Cost = 1.85 × $15–$30 = $28–$56. Straw is lightweight (~150 lbs/yd) and settles to half its depth.

3Playground with Rubber Mulch

Inputs

Area10 ft × 12 ft (120 sq ft)
Depth3 inches
Mulch TypeRubber Mulch

Result

Mulch Needed1.11 cubic yards
Cubic Feet30.0
Bags (2 cu ft)15
Est. Cost$89–$167
Weight~1,333 lbs

Area = 120 sq ft. Volume = 120 × (3/12) = 30 cu ft = 1.11 cu yd. Cost = 1.11 × $80–$150 = $89–$167. Rubber mulch is heavy (~1,200 lbs/yd) but lasts 10+ years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How deep should mulch be for garden beds?

Most garden beds need 2–3 inches of mulch for effective weed suppression and moisture retention. The ideal depth depends on mulch type: fine shredded bark works at 2 inches, wood chips need 3–4 inches, and straw requires 4–6 inches because it settles to half its depth.

  • Shredded bark: 2–3 inches (fine texture stays put)
  • Wood chips: 3–4 inches (coarser, needs more depth)
  • Straw: 4–6 inches (settles to ~50% of applied depth)
  • Rubber mulch: 2–3 inches (doesn't decompose)
  • Dense bark or wood chip mulch: limit to 3–4 inches around plants (coarse straw can go 4–6 inches)
Mulch TypeMin DepthMax DepthSettles To
Shredded Bark2"3"~80% after 1 year
Wood Chips3"4"~70% after 1 year
Straw4"6"~50% after settling
Pine Straw3"4"~60% after 6 months
Q

How many bags of mulch do I need?

A standard 2 cu ft bag covers 12 sq ft at 2" deep, 8 sq ft at 3" deep, or 6 sq ft at 4" deep. For a 200 sq ft bed at 3" depth: 200 ÷ 8 = 25 bags. One cubic yard equals 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft mulch.

  • 2 cu ft bag at 2": covers 12 sq ft
  • 2 cu ft bag at 3": covers 8 sq ft
  • 2 cu ft bag at 4": covers 6 sq ft
  • 1 cubic yard = 13.5 standard (2 cu ft) bags
  • Add 5–10% extra for uneven ground

Q

What happens if mulch is too deep?

Mulch deeper than 4 inches can suffocate plant roots by blocking oxygen and water. Excess depth traps moisture against stems and trunks, causing rot and fungal disease. "Volcano mulching" around trees (piling mulch against the trunk) kills trees over time.

  • Over 4": blocks oxygen to roots, causes root suffocation
  • Trunk contact: causes bark rot and pest entry points
  • Excess moisture: promotes fungal diseases and root rot
  • Matting: thick layers compress and repel water
  • Keep 2–3" gap between mulch and tree trunks/plant stems
Q

Is bulk mulch or bagged mulch cheaper?

Bulk mulch saves 40–60% for projects over 2 cubic yards. Bagged mulch costs $4–$7 per 2 cu ft bag ($54–$95 per yard), while bulk runs $25–$100 per yard plus $50–$100 delivery. Breakeven is around 2 cubic yards.

  • Bagged: $54–$95 per cubic yard (convenient, no delivery)
  • Bulk: $25–$100 per cubic yard + delivery fee
  • Delivery fee: typically $50–$100 for up to 5 yards
  • Breakeven: ~2 cubic yards (bulk becomes cheaper)
  • For 3+ yards: bulk saves $100–$300 vs bags

10 cu yd$540–$950$300–$500Bulk
Q

Which mulch type lasts the longest?

Stone and rubber mulch are permanent and never decompose. Among organic mulches, cedar lasts 2–3 years, hardwood bark 1–2 years, and straw 6–12 months. Longer-lasting mulch costs more upfront but saves money on annual replacement.

  • Stone/gravel: permanent, never needs replacement
  • Rubber mulch: 10+ years, best for playgrounds
  • Cedar mulch: 2–3 years, natural insect repellent
  • Hardwood bark: 1–2 years, most popular choice
  • Straw/pine straw: 6–12 months, cheapest option
Q

When should I apply mulch?

Apply mulch in late spring after soil has warmed and perennials have emerged, or in fall before the first frost. Spring mulch conserves moisture and suppresses weeds during the growing season. Fall mulch insulates roots for winter.

  • Late spring: after soil warms, perennials emerge
  • Fall: before first hard frost, insulates roots
  • Avoid: midwinter on frozen ground (traps cold)
  • Remove weeds before applying new mulch
  • Top up existing mulch annually to maintain depth
