Body Roundness Index
3.2
Lean — Low body roundness
The Body Roundness Index models your body as an ellipse using height and waist circumference. Your eccentricity value is 0.9877 — a value closer to 1 indicates a more elongated (lean) body shape, while lower values suggest a rounder body shape with more central adiposity. BRI specifically targets visceral fat, making it a useful complement to BMI for assessing metabolic health risk.

The Body Roundness Index is a measure of body shape based on height and waist circumference. Developed in 2013, BRI estimates body roundness on a scale where higher values indicate more central body fat. Unlike BMI, BRI specifically targets visceral adiposity.
BRI uses an eccentricity formula modeling the body as an ellipse: BRI = 364.2 - 365.5 × √(1 - (waist/2π)² / (0.5×height)²). It only requires height and waist circumference, making it simple to measure at home.
BRI and BMI measure different things. BMI uses weight and height but cannot distinguish between fat and muscle. BRI uses waist circumference to specifically assess central adiposity, making it better for predicting cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk.
| Metric | Inputs | Best At Predicting |
|---|---|---|
| BMI | Height, weight | General overweight/obesity |
| BRI | Height, waist | Visceral fat, metabolic risk |
| Waist-to-Height Ratio | Height, waist | Central obesity threshold |
A healthy BRI typically falls between 3.4 and 6.9. Scores below 3.4 indicate a lean body composition, while scores above 6.9 suggest increasing levels of central body fat and associated health risks.
| BRI Range | Category | Health Risk Level |
|---|---|---|
| Below 3.4 | Lean | Very low |
| 3.4–4.7 | Healthy | Low |
| 4.7–6.9 | Normal | Moderate |
| Above 6.9 | Overweight | Elevated |
Measure your waist at the narrowest point, typically at the level of the navel. Use a flexible measuring tape, keep it snug but not tight, and measure while standing with your abdomen relaxed after a normal exhale.
