Stride Tips

Stride vs Step: A stride is two steps (left-right-left). Step length is half the stride length.
Accuracy: For best results, walk/run 20 steps on a measured track and divide total distance by 10 (strides).
Terrain: Uphill walking shortens stride by 10–20%. Downhill may increase it slightly.

Example Calculations

1Male, 5'10", Moderate Walking Pace

Inputs

Height5'10" (70 inches)
GenderMale
ActivityWalking
PaceModerate

Result

Stride Length29.1 inches (73.8 cm)
Step Length14.5 inches (36.9 cm)
Steps per Mile4,362
10,000 Steps2.29 miles (3.69 km)

Stride = 70 × 0.415 × 1.0 = 29.05 in. Step = 29.05 / 2 = 14.525 in. Steps per mile = 63,360 / 14.525 = 4,362. Distance for 10,000 steps = 10,000 / 4,362 = 2.29 miles.

2Female, 5'4", Moderate Walking Pace

Inputs

Height5'4" (64 inches)
GenderFemale
ActivityWalking
PaceModerate

Result

Stride Length26.4 inches (67.1 cm)
Step Length13.2 inches (33.6 cm)
Steps per Mile4,795
10,000 Steps2.09 miles (3.36 km)

Stride = 64 × 0.413 × 1.0 = 26.432 in. Step = 26.432 / 2 = 13.216 in. Steps per mile = 63,360 / 13.216 = 4,795. Distance for 10,000 steps = 10,000 / 4,795 = 2.09 miles.

3Male, 6'0", Running Pace

Inputs

Height6'0" (72 inches)
GenderMale
ActivityRunning
PaceRun

Result

Stride Length82.1 inches (208.5 cm)
Step Length41.0 inches (104.3 cm)
Steps per Mile1,544
10,000 Steps6.48 miles (10.43 km)

Running stride = 72 × 1.14 = 82.08 inches. Step = 41.04 inches. Steps per mile = 63,360 / 41.04 = 1,544. 10,000 running steps covers 6.48 miles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How do you calculate stride length from height?

For walking, multiply your height in inches by a gender factor: 0.415 for males and 0.413 for females. This gives an average stride length. For running, the multiplier is higher: 1.0 for jogging, 1.14 for running, and 1.35 for sprinting.

  • Male walking stride: height (in) × 0.415
  • Female walking stride: height (in) × 0.413
  • Jogging stride: height (in) × 1.0
  • Running stride: height (in) × 1.14
  • Sprinting stride: height (in) × 1.35

Q

What is the difference between stride length and step length?

A stride is two steps — one full gait cycle from left foot to left foot (or right to right). Step length is one step, from one foot to the other. Stride length equals twice the step length. Most fitness trackers measure steps, not strides.

  • Stride = 2 steps (left-right-left complete cycle)
  • Step = 1 step (left to right, or right to left)
  • Stride length = step length × 2
  • Average male walking step: ~14–15 inches
  • Average female walking step: ~13–14 inches

Q

How many steps per mile for an average person?

The average person takes about 2,000 to 2,500 steps per mile while walking. Taller people take fewer steps (around 2,000) while shorter people take more (up to 2,500). Running reduces steps per mile to about 1,400–1,800 because of longer strides.

  • Walking (5'4"): ~2,400 steps per mile
  • Walking (5'9"): ~2,200 steps per mile
  • Walking (6'2"): ~2,050 steps per mile
  • Jogging: ~1,800–2,000 steps per mile
  • Running: ~1,400–1,600 steps per mile

Q

How far is 10,000 steps in miles?

For the average person walking, 10,000 steps covers about 4 to 5 miles. A 5'9" male walking at moderate pace covers about 4.5 miles in 10,000 steps. Shorter individuals cover less distance per step, so 10,000 steps might be closer to 4 miles.

  • 5'4" female, moderate walk: ~4.2 miles (6.7 km)
  • 5'9" male, moderate walk: ~4.5 miles (7.3 km)
  • 6'0" male, moderate walk: ~4.9 miles (7.8 km)
  • Running 10,000 steps: ~5.5–7.0 miles depending on pace and height
  • Daily 10,000 steps takes 60–90 minutes of walking
Q

Does walking pace affect stride length?

Yes, walking pace significantly affects stride length. Slow walking reduces stride by about 10% compared to a moderate pace, while fast walking increases it by about 10%. Running multiplies stride length by 2.5–3.5 times compared to walking due to the airborne phase of the gait.

  • Slow walk: stride is about 90% of moderate pace stride
  • Moderate walk: baseline stride length (height × 0.414 average)
  • Fast walk: stride is about 110% of moderate pace stride
  • Jogging: stride roughly equals height in inches
  • Sprinting: stride reaches 1.35× height in inches
